Don - All of the Walmart stores around here carry the Mrs. Wages brand of pickle mixes. It is in the same area as the balls canning supplies. I prefer their Kosher dill mix and the bread and butter is also good. You can also order it online thru Amazon.

I use Mrs Wages refrigerator/shelf stable small batch kosher dill pickle mixes. I don't get enough at one time to make a big batch or to mess with making a homemade brine so I use those and make a batch every week or two. Ball makes a bottle of mix where you can make as few or as many as you want although I don't like the taste quite as much and if you are somewhere that your house is humid it all cakes together like concrete. This years Mrs wages packets no longer show the water bath instructions and merely mentions that you can, but it's the same for most mixes. 20 minutes for pints and 30 for quarts i. Adjust times for your elevstion. Don't can them all throw a jar in the fridge for about a week and eat them fresh!! They're better than a claussen. I just wish they made an all natural mix. Another tip if you have crappy well water like mine where it looks like my laundry room looks like a cullingan tank storage facility or highly chlorinated city water go buy a jug or 2 of spring water

Yeah there is a potential safety issue when it comes to canning with the Mrs. Wages mixes - too little vinegar. OK for fridge storage for limited time but canning safety is considered borderline due to listeria growth possibilities. They really need to increase the vinegar to water ratio to 1:1 or add more citric acid to the mix to make them safe for long-term shelf storage.

Standard processing time for pickles using approved and tested recipes is 10 min for pints and 15 min for quarts. Longer processing times make them soft.
