Was this done to an interior surface? Could I do it to my red brick fireplace?

    Yes, you can. This particular sample is actually very smooth and polished. You would have to float out the brick and give it a smooth surface ether with cement or gypsum mud (then primed), then 3 coats of Veneziano, then wax. It will be fine with heat. It's a little complex, but not too bad. It's made with 3 colors of Veneziano.

    Would the less smooth finish be a bit easier for me to apply? It looked very similar but was just rougher.

    Yes, the less smooth would be easier. It would allow for the imperfections in the brick wall. Otherwise, it would have to be perfect. I would recommend Marmorino, then lime wash, then wax. Check out this video on lime wash...
