Help me pick sconces please!

I have a two story Mediterranean where the only thing I can update is the lighting fixtures for now and painting the exterior so please be kind. :) I am having trouble finding something interesting but at the same time look as though they belong in the home without looking outdated. A tough task. Thoughts anyone?

The white posterboard mock-ups represent the two different styles. They‘re centered on existing electrical boxes that I have to work with.

Option 1: (left side) 35H. Shade measures 11.75 x 12.5 x 8.25

Below:

Option 2 (right side) 25H Shade measures 7H x 13.75W x 7D

Bronze patina with ”greige” shade or gold patina with white shade

What a coincidence @BeverlyFLADeziner! I have six of those fixtures saved in my lighting folder. :) Usually I know exactly what I want, but for some reason I’m having a hard time with this one.

If it helps, these are in my dining room, open floor plan. I painted them a more antique brass finish.

#6 of Beverly’s ideas is my favorite. Your fireplace has a lot of heavy-ish detail. Your other lighting fixtures have a lot of geometric shapes. Not saying any of that is bad at all, just that I think #6 matches the general style without being overbearing or too overwhelming with what you already have. Just a pretty embellishment.

@jaja06 Hm, I never thought of that. Maybe I was trying too hard for the fixture not to get lost because the fireplace IS so heavy. But I see your point about choosing something softer so they are not competing. Thanks!

You could consider plaster or alabaster sconces that are translucent.

I like number six as well.

I quite like your option #1, as it suits room, looks like the right size and works well with the dark fireplace screen as well as your other lighting.

Then I’d add a dark piece on mantle to create a more layered look vs pieces being flanked on either side, as height variation is visually appealing.

@Maureen Thanks for your vote and suggestions! I did have two varying sized topiaries in brown pots but removed them because they were faux. I always wanted to display candle holders on the mantel, it seems so natural. Previously I had the two-light candelabra style sconces and they fought each other (candles candles and more candles!) but I will definitely try it again with whatever I use next. Candle holders would look great with Beverly’s alabaster choices.

@BeverlyFLADeziner The alabaster would tie in beautifully but I had similar sconces in another home back in the early 90s and I don’t want to repeat it. Also I was thinking that the area needs softening with fabric shade?

    Other options…

    Let’s call this Option A

    Height: 27.0 Inches

    Width: 11.0 Inches

    Depth: 7.5 Inches

    Shade Height: 11.00 Inches

    Shade Width: 8.75 Inches

    Shade Diameter: 11.00

Too feminine? It comes with different finish and shade options.

    Option B

Too geometric? As you can see from the fireplace and kitchen lighting, I enjoy quatrefoil but thought this might be going overboard with the same detail?

    Height: 32.5"

    Width: 14.5"

    Extension: 4.75"

    Option C

    Too heavy?

    20.75H x 4.5W x 6D

    Option D

Comes in bronze, different glass shade styles.

Option B would be perfect with your other fixtures. It's updated but belongs in your mediterranean home. I also like the first two you posted. A looks a little too delicate, and C and D don't match the style of your home.

@calidesign Very helpful, thanks! I am still leaning toward #1 if it’s not outdated.
