Kitchen of the Week: Modern-Industrial Style Nods to Travels
Home pros help a Utah family create a white kitchen full of texture and personality
Brad and Hailey Devine wanted a kitchen as wide-ranging as their backgrounds — she’s Norwegian; he’s British and Chilean — and they wanted it to reflect their frequent trips around the world. So the busy parents of three young daughters hired designers Erin Morgan and Kirsten Krason to help them create a new home in South Jordan, Utah, with an airy kitchen that looks well-traveled.
A family trip to a Norwegian cottage inspired a hand-plastered concrete-look accent wall that brings texture and interest to the design. A white tongue-and-groove ceiling nods to Norwegian homes as well. And a stylish mix of tones and finishes gives the kitchen a carefully curated, worldly look.

Double-hung windows with dark charcoal frames pop against the range wall, and they coordinate with the pendants over the island and the iron-framed bar stools with distressed brown leather seats.
Above each window, a modern wall sconce in antique brass can pivot to allow direct light up, down or side to side. “We went back and forth with a few different options, but these were simple and look great against the gray of the plaster wall,” Krason says. (Recessed lights in the ceiling provide additional illumination, but they were removed from these photos by the photographer.)
Cabinets on the back side of the island store seasonal items and craft supplies for the kids.

A vent hood in a custom antique white plaster finish hangs above a 36-inch range. “We have so many angular lines in the kitchen, this was a subtle way to add softness to that wall,” Krason says.
The lower cabinets feature all drawer storage. “Everything is easy to find because it’s all on the same level,” Krason says. “They have double dishwashers in the island, so this wall had to give us most of the functional storage.”
Satin nickel hardware, a steel-and-white range, brass sconces, stainless steel faucets and other finishes create a sophisticated mixed-metal look.

Knotty alder wood open shelves display special pieces the couple has collected during their travels. They found the brass teapot at a secondhand store in the Norwegian hometown of Hailey’s grandmother. “She has a lot of decorative items that are important to her and we wanted to show, but we also wanted as much as possible of that plaster showing,” Krason says. “We have electrical outlets wired into the bottom shelves so we could avoid outlets on the wall.”

The island and perimeter countertops are marble-look quartz with ribbons of gray veining on a clean white background. “It was less expensive and lower maintenance than marble, and it seemed like a better fit for our family,” Hailey says.
A high-rise, deck-mount bridge faucet in a stainless steel finish arches over an apron-front white sink. “I think this faucet has a European flair to it,” Krason says. “The house is a marriage of modern with European design, so this faucet was perfect for that.”
Two white-paneled dishwashers sit on either side of the sink. There’s also drawer storage and a paneled pullout for trash and recycling. “When you put a sink in an island, that makes it functional,” Krason says. “But you need a lot of things nearby.”
A pantry cabinet to the right of the white-paneled refrigerator has pullouts for dry goods. A butler’s pantry to the right (not shown) stores small appliances, including a microwave. “I wanted to have a double oven, but the aesthetics of having double ovens in the kitchen was not what I wanted,” Hailey says.

A large arched opening creates a distinctive transition between the kitchen and living room. “We wanted the arch to reflect my husband’s roots in Chile,” Hailey says. “We have so many industrial elements, it helps bring that coziness and warmth back into the space.”
A breakfast nook overlooks Salt Lake Valley. The concrete tabletop coordinates with the gray backsplash wall in the kitchen. A 20-light antique brass chandelier hangs above. “It’s such a big statement for a reasonable price,” Krason says.
A mix of benches, chairs and materials reflects the curated look the couple was going for in the new kitchen. “I love how it feels very lived in,” Hailey says. “I’m not afraid to cook in this kitchen, and it includes many trinkets from our family’s travels. We love this kitchen. It’s where we spend most of our day.”

The open and airy kitchen features a 9½-foot-long island. The large modern-industrial cast-aluminum pendants above strike a dramatic tone against the concrete-look, hand-plastered backsplash wall. The textured wall and its gray finish were inspired by a family stay in a Norwegian cottage during a visit to the hometown of Hailey’s grandfather. “The living room has a concrete fireplace, so it balances the two spaces out,” designer Krason says.
A tongue-and-groove ceiling painted a crisp white (Snowbound by Sherwin-Williams) also gives a nod to Hailey’s Scandinavian roots. “The ceiling was inspired by the Norwegian homes of my relatives,” she says. “I knew I wanted to incorporate it, because it’s nostalgic to me.”
Decorative stained white oak beams add a touch of rustic warmth to the ceiling. And engineered hardwood flooring layers in more warmth and character. “We wanted something durable, but if it got dinged it would add to the history of the house,” Hailey says.
