Kitchen of the Week: Modern Minnesota Walk-Up
Red accents against glossy white tile and walnut cabinets provide bold touches amid subtle style
An open, bright space topped the wish list for this Minneapolis kitchen. Since the kitchen is tucked away at the back of the second floor of a walk-up home, it was important to the client that it still feel central and connected to the rest of the house. Krista Schwartz of Indicia Interior Design opened up the kitchen to the adjoining rooms and gave it a clean, crisp feel accented with a few bright red fixtures.
The home is a walk-up, so the kitchen is located on the second floor and faces the backyard. The yard is set on a steep slope toward the house, so the kitchen has a clear view of the entire yard. The client redesigned the backyard at the same time and installed a beautiful water feature that faces the kitchen. "The kitchen is an amazingly calm space when the windows are open and you hear the water falling," Schwartz says.

The LED-lit cabinets are one of Schwartz's favorite parts about the kitchen. Each shelf has a row of LEDs running through it, lighting up the interior of the cabinet when the doors are open. All the cabinetry was custom made out of walnut, and aluminum doors were installed on the upper cabinetry.
Stainless steel pulls from Siro add to the kitchen's modern look but are slim enough that fingerprints won't become an issue. Schwartz had oak flooring installed in this space and finished to match the flooring in the rest of the home for continuity.

Since the kitchen is next to a media room, Schwartz molded the end of the island into an oval, allowing for a convenient view of the TV. The location of the kitchen in the house also made it difficult to find a route to the exterior for the direct venting of the exhaust hood, but the contractors made it work.
