Garden in Helena, Montana for a couple. The back yard was open and exposed before we installed a privacy fence. We removed all lawn, replacing it with a round patio, dry stream bed, two water features, a large Ipe deck with shade pergola and built-in benches, and a small Asian-style moss and fern garden with bronze Buddha sculptures and stepping stones. It is low-maintenance and water conserving because the garden is drip irrigated.

The north side yard is less actively used, but it does have a very inviting quality to it. The double gates allow a piece of equipment to access the back for heavy work. The same irregular bluestone is the pathway. Huge aqua blue boulders were placed at the corner of the house

This early-phase Japanese-inspired garden draws from the Buddhist, Shinto, and Taoist philosophies and combines the basic elements of plants, water, and rocks along with simple, clean lines to create a tranquil backyard retreat. Plant material used includes Japanese varieties of trees, shrubs and perennials woven together to create interest throughout each season.

A good view of the Arbor design as it is nestled into the garden plant material. As the season progresses the roof top plant material flourishes and blooms with colors that are prevalent throughout the design. We always consider the plant material color to the color of the building materials we use.
