The popularity of open-concept living has turned many homeowners on to eat-in kitchens. In our increasingly busy lives, having a space where multiple activities can take place while still being together as a family is more and more important. This casual approach to dining gives us back precious time, allowing meals can be cooked, eaten and cleaned up in the same space, creating a more relaxed lifestyle. Learn how to bring the ease of an eat-in kitchen to your home with the following ideas.

Counter Eating

The simplest way to turn your kitchen into a dining space is by pulling up bar stools or counter stools to the back of an island or peninsula. Whether it’s a raised breakfast bar or a regular counter-height zone, keep this space clear of appliances and decor so you can use it to enjoy a casual meal. The eat-in kitchen bar solution is perfect for friends or children to hangout and feel included while you whip up a meal or wipe down the dishes. It may even encourage them to help!

Create a Nook

If you’ve got a little extra space to spare, consider turning it into a breakfast nook. Simply tuck a small table and chairs into a quiet corner of the kitchen. If you want to make it a little more permanent, build in a bench against one or two walls for booth or banquette-style dining. If you already have a window seat in your kitchen area, pull up a table and put some chairs on the opposite side and voila! You now have an eat-in kitchen nook. WIth any of these options, consider using upholstery that’s easy to wipe down, especially if you have kids.

Take It to the Table

You may be considering combined kitchen and dining options because you simply don’t have enough space for a dedicated dining room. Don’t worry, you can still have a fully functional dining table. With an open floor plan, place an eat-in kitchen table adjacent to your prep space so that the two are visually connected. If possible, coordinate materials, colors and furniture of the kitchen and dining spaces so that they feel like one. If you need flexibility when it comes to how the space is used day-to-day, put your table on wheels to easily maneuver it out of the way. Another alternative is to have your entire kitchen island double as a dining table — it doesn’t get more “eat-in” than that!
