Thank you! The door its self is from Heister House Millwork in Mt. Pleasant Mills, PA. The stain glass above it was made by Cumberland Stained Glass, also in PA.

    Hope this helps!

It's not an oak floor... it is character grade walnut, which means there are knots and mineral streaks. Your oak floor could be re-sanded and stained a similar color to match, but the wood will have a different pattern. A good flooring mechanic should be able to come up with some color match ideas on-site for you. Good luck!

How high is the wainscot? Is there a name for this style?

This style is commonly called either 'flat panel' or 'shaker' and this particular area sits around 42" high

Hello! We recommend a marine grade or quick drying epoxy to fill holes in character wood. Random placement of knots creates a more rustic, natural look. Pegs can also give a floor added definition and aesthetic, in addition to the graining and knots

Sorry - we don't sell floor plans as each of our homes is custom! If you're local to the Harrisburg, PA area, we're happy to work with you on a project.

Re:floor. What is durability of walnut. Any special care?

  • PRO
    Oak & Broad
Black Walnut while very popular is not as durable as White Oak or Hickory (two other very popular species right now). One option is to install White Oak and use a Walnut stain to emulate the color. The grain pattern however will be very different. If Walnut is the only thing you want to put down just make sure to use a stain or matte finish poly to hide any marks. I do have a client with two Great Danes and Walnut floors. They have noticed marks near the front door and dog bowls. Thats about it. Let me know if you have any wood flooring questions. joel@oakandbroad.com

These walnut floors were provided by Rehmeyer Wood floors and installed by Farinelli Construction. We used a several step process in the finishing to add to the 'character grade' of the wood which on the hardness scale is less than oak but harder than pine. We used a 'character grade wood from the start and glazed it to fill the knots and imperfections. Then sanded the glaze and then used 4-5 coats of a matte finish tung oil. We feel that this oil provides a durable finish that is easy to clean and touch up. We feel that if floors are lightly screened and recoated before they become too heavily damaged (every 3-5 years) they will stay looking pretty nice... without having to resand and start again.

The floors in the photo are American Black Walnut floors with pegs. Very pretty! Natural finish over Oak looks very good with any number of cabinet combinations.

We often install character grade white oak floors in our homes and maybe they could explore stain colors that are either a shade lighter or darker than the cabinetry to create a little contrast. We highly recommend getting samples and seeing it all in the space together to help make a decision!
