Without a door to the bedroom, the random cutout b/w the living area & bedroom needed to be closed off. A Toile fabric covered board seals the window and becomes a memento board. Shelves were added to a recessed wall to create a bookcase & entertainment center. A round from a previous table fits perfectly on the ottoman which can provide additional seating when entertaining. photo: Chris Dorsey

At 166 sq ft, the size of the living/sleeping area in this studio apartment was quite challenging. We made it work by taking careful dimensions of the space as well as every piece of furniture before purchasing. Even the height of the printer mattered as it had to fit between the filing cabinet and the desk. The busy student who lives here had two primary needs: sleeping and studying. Upon completion we felt we met those needs quite well.

Painting the lower portion of the walls a darker color helps tie together the bed, the bedside table, and the dresser, which are all vintage pieces Ari inherited from her mother.

This Manhattan Upper East side apartment renovation introduces memories of California into a New York setting for clients who embrace the Big Apple lifestyle but didn’t want to give up their Marin County, California comforts. The carved out ceilings and walls add a new dimension to the space; while the blond color woods and curved shapes bring memories of a calmer life. The overall result of the apartment design is a fun, warm and relaxing refuge from their current, higher energy lives.

the bathroom in this tiny studio apartment was devoid of storage & personality. the landlord painted the bathroom with flat paint. every time water ran there would be splash marks on the wall. the entire back wall and front door were covered with temporary vinyl wallpaper. the client wanted a place the feature her fun punk rock side so a black & white decor with pops of hot pink was implemented and keeps with the rest of the apartment's style. Not shown: a repurposed shelf was installed above the door for towels, toilet paper & additional toiletries. photo: Chris Dorsey

My client lived in a small studio apartment, and after working long days at his tech start-up, he needed a sanctuary in which to return and recharge. His only requests were that the space feel like a yoga studio and embody Zen.
On a limited budget, I made the artwork myself, in addition to creating a custom headboard. The headboard is made of poplar wood, which naturally has hints of green. I picked this wood specifically to match the avocado green striped duvet cover.

Adding stripes to the front door added some personality to the entryway. Being a renter, I didn't want to paint so I took advantage of the fact that my front door is metal and used magnetic material to stick on the stripes.. You could also use wall decals as another easy on/off solution. Here's how I made my stripes: http://www.engineeryourspace.com/episodes/how-to-decorate-an-entryway/

Good design must reflect the personality of the client. So when siblings purchased studios in Downtown by Philippe Starck, one of the first buildings to herald the revitalization of Manhattan’s Financial District, the aim was to create environments that were truly bespoke. The brother’s tastes jibed synchronously with the insouciant idea of France’s most popular prankster converting a building that once housed the buttoned-up offices of JP Morgan Chase. His collection of Takashi Murakami works, the gallery-like centerpiece of the main area, announces his boldness and flair up front, as do furnishings by Droog, Moooi and, of course Starck, as well as hide rugs and upholstery, and a predominantly red palette. His sister was after something soothing and discreet. So Axis Mundi responded with a neutrals and used glass to carve out a bedroom surrounded by drapes that transform it into a golden cocoon. Hide (albeit less flamboyantly applied) evokes a familial commonality, and built-in furniture and cabinetry optimize space restrictions inherent in studio apartments.
