Your Favorite Room By Cathy Zaeske
This screened porch was created as a sanctuary, a place to retreat and be enveloped by nature in a calm,
relaxing environment. The monochromatic scheme helps to achieve this quiet mood while the pop
of color comes solely from the surrounding trees. The hits of black help to move your eye around the room and provide a sophisticated feel. Three distinct zones were created to eat, converse
and lounge with the help of area rugs, custom lighting and unique furniture.

An area off to the side of this great room was set aside for the kids' play space. Brightly colored foam tiles delineate the space, and serve as a soft landing spot, without competing with the room's decor. A vaulted bead board ceiling, left with a natural finish, further isolates the two spaces, giving it a cozy separate feel.

The interior design components that make this bedroom work so well: custom window treatments, creative wall treatment, and the right bedding combined with a stylish area rug.
I've been asked several times about the paint colors in this room...
I always advise people that they should not start with the paint colors when decorating a room, because it's much more difficult to match other decorating elements to paint colors such as fabrics, artwork and area rugs. Where as paint colors can be matched to anything. The paint colors can also look different in a room depending on lighting, both natural and electric. Photos can be great starting points for deciding the color scheme that appeals to you, however, photographs typically don't depict the actual paint colors. Consequently, it is dangerous to say you want the exact paint colors that you see in a photo. What else are you putting in the room that has green in it? Artwork, area rugs and fabrics are great starting points for matching up paint colors, and you definitely want to have a design plan before you start painting color.
Here's blog post I wrote on how to ease the process of choosing paint colors...

Our poster project for The Three P's, this small midcentury home south of campus has great bones but lacked vibrancy - a je ne sais quoi that the clients were searching to savoir once and for all. SYI worked with them to nail down a design direction and furniture plan, and they decided to invest in the big-impact items first: built-ins and lighting and a fresh paint job that included a beautiful deep blue-green line around the windows. The vintage rug was an Etsy score at an awesome price, but only after the client spent months scouring options and sources online that matched the vision and dimensions of the plan. A good year later, the West Elm sofa went on sale, so the client took advantage; some time after that, they painted the kitchen, created the drop zone / bench area, and rounded out the room with occasional tables and accessories. Their lesson: in patience, and details, there is beauty.

Adamik and Churney provided for a dividing wall to separate the kitchen from the living area, a decision that expanded possibilities in terms of how to best layout the space. At merely five-feet tall, the partition maintains the open-air feeling of the space, yet is ample enough to accommodate the entertainment center.
In order to unify the Living and Dining areas, Adamik chose a large-scale seagrass rug. It is latex-padded, making it not only comfortable under foot, but also an improvement in terms of sound dampening. "I layered an indigo blue Pakistani Gabbeh over the seagrass to define the living room," the designer explains. The layering of various textures and materials adds to the room's understated depth.
