AFTER: We re-imagined the space's orientation and brought in a strong horizontal element to balance the focal wall. We added dramatic new lighting in the pendants and under the mantel to add drama and layers of light, further enhancing the focal point and making the space feel modern and finished. Since we had to keep the existing fireplace, we just covered over the top portion with bumped-out drywall and a long, deep mantel. New carpet and paint colors played off the new upholstery, custom window cornice and custom accent pillows and made for a cohesive, focused space.

This space was a blank canvas, it had recently had a new carpet fitted and was newly painted, but the client wasn’t sure what to do next.
The brief was to create something calm and unique to the client, that had enough storage, but still felt homely and inviting.
We added shelving for interest on the back wall. brought in some books and pictures that were of sentimental value. We installed a large clock, not only for the practicality of time but also to add interest to the wall.
There were practical elements like a high rise stand for a laptop to free up room on the desk, scented candles, chosen specifically for their scent as they were energising, help focus but also calming. We also added a filing system with compartments to organise the working space better.

We are excited to have recently submitted the planning application for this New-Build home in Worsley, Greater Manchester.
Our key focus during the design process has been to create a stunning home for the Clients' family, which also suits and enhances its quiet residential context.
Since early discussions with the Client, the brief was to include an open-plan living space and five bedrooms. We gained a fuller picture of their needs through virtual meetings as well as a meeting on site, in which the importance of making the most of the wooded surroundings became clear. Through sharing example precedents with the client, we also came to a modern-traditional aesthetic.
The positioning and footprint of the building is constrained to be in line with the street frontages, whilst leaving space for a large square garden at the rear. The conservative material palette was chosen to fit within the residential context, and the front elevation is defined by the Georgian bay windows, with stone detailing. Five well-sized bedrooms have been achieved through utilising the roof space. To keep in proportion with the neighbouring homes, this third floor is not noticeable from street view.
The rear facade faces its own private garden, and large areas of glazing at ground floor allow a connection between the interior living space and the outdoors. To continue this principal in the upstairs spaces, one bedroom has a juliette balcony and another has its own wrap-around balcony, sat under the trees of the wooded boundary. Sheltered underneath this is a sociable outdoor kitchen with patio dining. A path from here leads to a seating space at the far end of the garden, which is positioned to make the most of the sun.
Enhancing lives and exceeding expectations is always at the heart of our design process. With these high hopes, we look forward to the acceptance of our planning submission and to the construction of their new home!

THEME Every element of this room is tied to a traditional nursery rhyme. From the “Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe” to “Hickory Dickory Dock,” the Cobbler brings to life some of childhood’s most memorable and endearing rhymes.
FOCUS To counter the room’s high ceiling, the design introduces elements with both comparable height and considerable warmth, making the room feel spacious, yet cozy. A large, shoe-shaped armoire pays homage to the “Old Woman” and is built in place from floor to ceiling. It features curtained doors and drawer fronts, a wooden shingle roof with a blue bird on top, and a clothesline for baby’s favorite wares. The mural over the crib, showing the Cow Jumping over the Moon and her counterpart, the Dish Running Away with the Spoon, adds fantasy and humor. Quaint, hand-painted stone walls that surround the shoe and hardwood flooring that partially replaces wall-to-wall carpeting help unify the room. An organic curve unites the wood and carpet gracefully, adding visual interest and organic beauty.
STORAGE The shoe holds clothing and linens, while the changing table stores diapers and diaper accessories. Shelving installed above the changing table adds color and interest, while creating room for stuffed animals, pictures,
toys and treasures.
GROWTH The room’s childlike theme and magical giant shoe, although intended for young children, are sufficiently functional and artistic to remain an endearing attraction for the room’s occupant throughout childhood and adolescence.
SAFETY Precautions are taken to secure power outlets, keep exposed shelving out of reach of little hands, and allow medicinal items to be secured in a safe, convenient location. The clothesline is suspended high above the room and is secured to stay out of reach.

This battleaxe subdivision at the edge of Barwon Heads was quickly snapped up when it was first released. Given the location, adjacent to a bush reserve and the Barwon River, these rare river front views are difficult to come by. However, for owners Debbie and Glenn, who were previously living in the United States, it was the perfect time and drawcard in anticipation of their return to Australia.
Referred to as ‘The Tree House’ after the established trees on the banks of the river, the couple was keen to live in a house that felt one with the environment – hence the extensive use of timber inside and out. Designed by RUBI Architects, the initial challenge was creating a substantial home on a relatively modest site (640 square metres) with two easements on the narrow block, one along a side boundary, the other across the home’s northern elevation. “Our client’s children have left home but they still wanted a reasonably large place for their family and friends to stay, some of whom live in the United States,” says architect Alex Rubilar, director of RUBI Architects.
Given the awkward position of the Barwon Heads site, together with the reduced available footprint due to the site easements, the house presents as a modest brick and timber garage to the street. It’s only when one walks along the side path to the front door, articulated by a series of timber arbours, that one realises there’s a two-storey house to be found. Clad in spotted gum that ‘speaks’ to the established trees, there’s a sense of quietness rather than attracting attention. Given this house was essentially designed for a couple, the floorplan features all the bedrooms, including the main bedroom, at ground level, with the main living areas above. And when the children and grandchildren come over, there’s the benefit of a second living area at ground level, a combined rumpus room or alternatively a place for yoga. “With most of the living areas upstairs, the house feels more contained when the extended family aren’t here,” says Rubilar.
Given the idyllic views to the north, the design includes large picture windows both at the bedroom level as well as across the kitchen and living areas on the first floor. And to make the most of the outdoors, including the area’s extensive birdlife, RUBI Architects created a substantial outdoor deck that leads from the kitchen and living areas. Complete with automated awnings, this deck becomes an outdoor room and can be used for most of the year, even in the cooler months.
The first floor is the owner’s domain with a large open plan kitchen, dining and living area, together with a bathroom and also an enclosed home office. Pivotal to the design is the cantilevered island bench, made from granite and complemented by spotted gum joinery. And given the location and the focus on sustainability, there are operable highlight windows above the kitchen that allow for both additional light and cross ventilation. The large sliding doors also enable a continual breeze from the water’s edge, ensuring a comfortable home all year round. And in winter, when the nights can be chilly, the owners can enjoy sitting around the open fireplace.
Rather than segment spaces, areas are more loosely defined. There’s a cocktail/drinks area, for example, adjacent to the kitchen that appears as an extension of the kitchen – complete with a fridge for wine storage, a wine rack and extensive spotted gum joinery for additional storage. RUBI Architects was also mindful of strengthening the connection to the garden. So as well as ‘floating’ timber treads for the main staircase that allow the bush setting to be enjoyed immediately past the front door, there’s also an exterior spiral staircase that connects the two levels, used regularly by the owners as well as by their dog, Barney.
Unlike some of the new white-painted brick and light-weight cladding houses in this enclave, The Tree House blends in beautifully with its naturalist setting. As remarked by one of the owners, “It’s the strong connection to the trees that continues to give us enormous satisfaction” – literally disappearing in this unique enclave.

Colour blocking is a fantastic way to zone areas without taking up valuable floor space and we went for it in this gorgeous nursery.
The brief was for a contemporary, colourful nursery with Scandi vibes. As we all know Scandinavian design doesn’t always allow for bold colours so we focused on strong clean shapes and Scandinavian design references in the furniture.
The client didn’t want the room to be heavily gendered like so many nurseries so opting for a gorgeous deep teal and a stone coloured beige gives the perfect backdrop for layers of other colours to be added as the children grow.
The client originally wanted white to be the predominant colour in this room but to add the cosy feel we convinced them to go for a zoned corner. The beige stone colour paint continues up onto the ceiling to create a little colour pocket at one end of the room. This is a nice upgrade on a ‘feature wall’.
We love being sent pictures of the children enjoying the space from the client.

This Elegant Contemporary remodel project is our featured project of the month, and includes a back yard lawn “scrape off” and redo. We removed all the old grass and key surrounding plant material that was dated, and added fresh new plants and created a complete themed destination. The client had this idea in her head, and we turned it into reality, making this tranquil gathering place her back yard focus!
We installed updated lawn sprinklers for the newly designed grass area, and a raw steel border to define the lounge space. The interior is lush synthetic turf installed in and around travertine paving stone, patterned after the client’s worn and dated “before” back yard. We told her that we could turn her concept into something absolutely stunning, and here is the finished result.
We also renewed the landscape lighting with new fixtures and a programmable timer, and designed space for a water feature that was a sentimental family must-have! We planted new vines that will green up the side walls. The installation of this complete space included completely automated systems for lights and water, and you can see from the pictures, just a little bit better than the other guys.
As with every project, we provided our “like it was my house” service, and the client was so excited with this space that we have since been contacted for the front yard!

For Model 2 we focused on a Contemporary Farmhouse style direction accenting the black and white specifications of the home. The furniture selections are a combination of rustic yet contemporary merging the best of old and new. Binding country elements with a contemporary spin, the décor blends clean lines, neutral palettes, layered textures and natural materials to create a timeless look that’s bursting with character. The overall look was completed with the use of accessories, art and rugs where we will introduce our color pallet of black, white, rustic orange and cognac leathers. Each space is designed to provide an elevated yet inviting and warming feel where potential buyers can picture themselves with their loved ones. Model 2 has spaces that we designated for kids and others were staged more adult oriented keeping the style cohesive throughout the home. Mixing rustic, traditional pieces with cleaner lines furniture and modern accents helped us strike the perfect balance of comfy and trendy Contemporary Farmhouse Style.

The home of Nobel Prize and Pullitzer Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck is located in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Each year they host the Festival of Trees holiday event. I was selected to decorate the large library.
The tree depicted holiday traditions throughout the world. Different framed photos were hung, along with traditional holiday decorations. A sleigh filled with gifts and books sits adjacent to the tree. A bircage filled with seasonal decor is the focus of the seating area. Two carolers adorn the fireplace.
