This custom planting design incorporated seasonal annuals into a succession of perennial plants, shrubs, and flowering plants to create multiple seasons of delight!
Building upon the amazing work by Chicago Roof Deck + Garden, our team designed and installed a custom planting design for our client. Design intent incorporated seasonality to the progression from Spring, Summer, Fall, and into Winter, into an incredibly compact area.

This is a prime example of premium quality craftsmanship in the landscape design/build business. By redesigning the front entrance to create a porch/landing with an additional parking court, we significantly improved the appearance and value of the property in Rye, New York.
The new driveway was constructed of a porous asphalt material which improved the stormwater management adjacent to the wetland.
The landscape planting featured a variety of long blooming, native flowering perennials which attract beneficial insect species. This contributes to the successful management of the landscape with sustainable organics.
The custom kinetic sculpture adds a nice finishing touch.
Instead of a typical evergreen hedge, native clethra was planted on the property border to define the space while contributing fragrance, grace and pollinators to what easily could have been a less active, sterile space.
Heavily planted ground cover natives such as ajuga, creeping jenny, Irish moss, sweet woodruff and geraniums made the need for weeding practically obsolete.
The use of ground covers as mulch was most effective for resource management.

Granit Architects + Interiors
This small but complex project saw the creation of a terrace above an existing flat roof of a property in Battersea Square.
We were appointed to design and prepare a scheme to submit for planning permission. We were able to successfully achieve consent to extend the roof terrace and to create approximately 100 square metres of extra space. The process was protracted and required negotiation with the local authority to restrict any overlooking potential. The solution to this challenge was to create a design with two parts connected by a 1m wide walkway. We also introduced planting in front of the glazing that controls the overlooking without the need for sandblasted glass. This combination of glazing and planting has made a significant difference to the final feel of space on the terrace.
Our design creates separate zones on the terrace, with sections for living, dining and cooking. We also changed the windows in the penthouse to sliding folding doors, which has created a much more functional and spacious feeling terrace.
We had to work closely with the structural engineer to work out the best way to create a deck structure over the existing roof. Ultimately the design required large long-spanning steels supported by the load-bearing walls below. An infill deck structure supports the terrace too. There was significant technical coordination required with glass balustrade company to achieve the right finish.
The terrace would not have been complete without a great garden. We worked in partnership with garden designer Richard Miers, who specified the planted beds, water features, planting, irrigation system and lighting.
Overall we have created a beautiful terrace for our client with approximately 100 square metres of extra living space.

Project Description:
The goal of the Vaccaro project was to change the existing non-functional landscape into multiple entertainment spaces while working within the tight confines of impervious coverage requirements. The project consisted of removing, redesigning and re-installing existing hardscaping, front and rear, reconfiguring the driveway to accommodate more parking, handling storm water on-site, and increasing the aesthetic appeal of the property.
The client was remodeling the home in the theme of a rustic French country estate and in our design we endeavored to adhere to this chosen theme. The existing driveway was a circular driveway located off of the main axis of the front door. Reconfiguring the driveway improved vehicular flow, provided additional parking, and reduced impervious space. By consolidating the parking to the side of the house where the garage is located, we maintained the French theme in encouraging arriving cars to pull up closer to the home's entry. We also worked with the architect in the renovation of the home to position the garage windows so that they were placed in the voids of the arbor we constructed over the parking spaces by the garage. The rustic arbor creates a vertical element and delineates the pedestrian walkway from vehicular traffic. The main walkway spans the front of the home so that it extends down to the parking area to guide visitors to the main entrance.
To handle the storm water generated by the driveway, we installed a rain garden, which was placed in the front right side yard. The rain garden area was excavated, the soil in the planting areas was heavily amended with compost, sand, and diatomaceous earth, and mostly native plant material was installed to help absorb excess water. In the bottom-most area of the basin filter fabric was laid to help prevent migration of the stone into the soil and decorative stone was spread to slow the flow of water. Storm water is held until it successfully infiltrates the soil, and the plant material provides a natural habitat that supports butterflies, birds, and beneficial insects.
The existing front patio was removed and the size increased to make the space more functional. To increase function and circulation we worked with the architect to create a dining room that extends to the out-of-doors by adding French doors to the front of the home, which open to the new gravel front terrace. The homeowner desired a planting scheme that would create delineation between the front yard and the gravel terrace without blocking the morning sunlight. To achieve this we chose standardized Physocarpus 'Diablo' to compliment the warm cream-colored stucco of the home and provide structure to the patio space.
In the rear of the property we removed the existing brick patio and installed a dry-laid quartzite patio that nicely compliments the cream-colored stucco. We redesigned the rear patio space using 45 degree angles to represent the old French design theory of bisecting spaces with diagonals. Utilizing this design theory created more interesting patio spaces and allowed us to soften the sharp angles by planting the negative spaces between the house and patio. Seat walls were also designed and installed to create more seating without sacrificing impervious space.
Per the homeowner's wishes, we also designed a separate area in the rear of the yard for a natural boulder fire pit, which is located along the axis of the kitchen window. Half of the ring utilizes boulders for seating for a small gathering while the other half
allowed the homeowner's addition of colorful Adirondack chairs to finish the fire circle.
Incorporating the French theme throughout, we also designed and installed a small vegetable garden in the side yard so the homeowner could grow her own vegetables and herbs.

Working through each challenge successfully, our crews completed the project within budget. The backyard includes each element our clients requested: a patio, fire pit, lounge area, core-drill water feature focal point, synthetic grass, and all-season hot tub space with a covered structure and custom towel holders. Hints of floral color and plenty of Asian-themed plantings complete the look, and the final project is one our clients are thrilled to enjoy for many years!

Lee Edwards - residential design
Situated on the west slope of Mt. Baker Ridge, this remodel takes a contemporary view on traditional elements to maximize space, lightness and spectacular views of downtown Seattle and Puget Sound. We were approached by Vertical Construction Group to help a client bring their 1906 craftsman into the 21st century. The original home had many redeeming qualities that were unfortunately compromised by an early 2000’s renovation. This left the new homeowners with awkward and unusable spaces. After studying numerous space plans and roofline modifications, we were able to create quality interior and exterior spaces that reflected our client’s needs and design sensibilities. The resulting master suite, living space, roof deck(s) and re-invented kitchen are great examples of a successful collaboration between homeowner and design and build teams.

Pro-Land Landscape Construction Inc.
This property in Rosedale was completed in phases over a three year period. Many quality professionals were involved in the planning and construction of this project. Pro-Land was given the opportunity to design and install phase one of this property in 2014. This included the main patio, deck, feature walls, planting beds and outdoor kitchen area.
The homeowner then reached out to Janet Rosenberg & Studios in 2016 to complete a Garden Renovation, which included a new pool, a spa hot tub, green house and perimeter planting design. Pro-Land began construction of phase two in 2016 and completed works in 2017.
Finally, the homeowner brought her own expertise in design to contribute to the overall composition of the space.
A true collaborative effort from many talented professionals made this project a success.

Cantoni Irvine
Design by Blue Heron in Partnership with Cantoni. Photos By: Stephen Morgan
For many, Las Vegas is a destination that transports you away from reality. The same can be said of the thirty-nine modern homes built in The Bluffs Community by luxury design/build firm, Blue Heron. Perched on a hillside in Southern Highlands, The Bluffs is a private gated community overlooking the Las Vegas Valley with unparalleled views of the mountains and the Las Vegas Strip. Indoor-outdoor living concepts, sustainable designs and distinctive floorplans create a modern lifestyle that makes coming home feel like a getaway.
To give potential residents a sense for what their custom home could look like at The Bluffs, Blue Heron partnered with Cantoni to furnish a model home and create interiors that would complement the Vegas Modern™ architectural style. “We were really trying to introduce something that hadn’t been seen before in our area. Our homes are so innovative, so personal and unique that it takes truly spectacular furnishings to complete their stories as well as speak to the emotions of everyone who visits our homes,” shares Kathy May, director of interior design at Blue Heron. “Cantoni has been the perfect partner in this endeavor in that, like Blue Heron, Cantoni is innovative and pushes boundaries.”
Utilizing Cantoni’s extensive portfolio, the Blue Heron Interior Design team was able to customize nearly every piece in the home to create a thoughtful and curated look for each space. “Having access to so many high-quality and diverse furnishing lines enables us to think outside the box and create unique turnkey designs for our clients with confidence,” says Kathy May, adding that the quality and one-of-a-kind feel of the pieces are unmatched.
rom the perfectly situated sectional in the downstairs family room to the unique blue velvet dining chairs, the home breathes modern elegance. “I particularly love the master bed,” says Kathy. “We had created a concept design of what we wanted it to be and worked with one of Cantoni’s longtime partners, to bring it to life. It turned out amazing and really speaks to the character of the room.”
The combination of Cantoni’s soft contemporary touch and Blue Heron’s distinctive designs are what made this project a unified experience. “The partnership really showcases Cantoni’s capabilities to manage projects like this from presentation to execution,” shares Luca Mazzolani, vice president of sales at Cantoni. “We work directly with the client to produce custom pieces like you see in this home and ensure a seamless and successful result.”
And what a stunning result it is. There was no Las Vegas luck involved in this project, just a sureness of style and service that brought together Blue Heron and Cantoni to create one well-designed home.

nd:studio designed the landscape for a major redesign of an existing 1970s house set within the South Downs National Park overlooking the River Itchen valley.
The garden reflects the strong linear form of the house which is expressed in the paving arrangement and orientation of the paths. The planting was critical to the success of the project and had to be natural and understated to maintain a close relationship with the landscape beyond. A river of Panicum grass forms the backbone of the planting design which cuts through more naturalistically arranged planting.
Spatial Design Architects
The existing site incorporated a moderate sized 1950’s detached dwelling with fantastic estuary views. The brief was for a replacement 5-bedroom house with large open plan living space, indoor swimming pool, gym and play /entertaining spaces over four floors.
For many years our clients lived in a home they built next door and an opportunity arose to purchase the site next door. Their dream was to develop a forever house in a contemporary style they had always desired.
Spatial Design Architects exhibited our portfolio at Grand Designs Live Show where our client visited our stand and made the initial enquiry, we were selected by our client to provide initial ideas for the scheme along with four other Architects practices.
The first stage of the selection process was to submit a feasibility study of ideas for the project and to incorporate key design ideas to the client. We were selected from the initial design ideas to go into stage two to develop the design further against one other well-known architects’ practice.
After a developed design brief and further design ideas, we were appointed by the family to develop the design, apply for planning permission, prepare technical design, and take the project through to completion as a traditional tendered contract.
The objective of the scheme was to design an inspirational, contemporary family home that improves the quality of design locally. The proposed dwelling would be centred around the panoramic views over Thorpe Esplanade Beach Huts, Shoebury Common and the Estuary.
The client required a house with eco-technologies, materials fit for purpose, due to its location, provides a stunning outlook and a design with a difference.
Since the project was completed the Local Building Control Authority ‘LABC’ suggested that we submit the scheme for their ‘Building Excellence Region Housing Award’ in 2020, this was successful and won the ‘Best Individual New Home, East Anglia Region’.
We were also contacted by the UK Property Awards, to submit the scheme for their regional architecture single residence award, this was successful and won the ‘Best Architecture Single Residence East of England’ award and qualified for the UK Award. Subsequently the ‘Beach House’ won ‘Best Architecture Single Residence UK’ award and ‘Best International Architecture Single Residence’ Award, an amazing achievement to have such a successful submission and win 4 awards for this beautiful house that our clients believed ‘Spatial Design Architects’ could design, detail and deliver!
