This 88 square foot Montclair bath is the main bathroom for the family. The 6 drawer vanity, built from reclaimed Amish barnwood from Pennsylvania, is stepped back at the sides to allow for more room at the entrance. The floating shelves in the Towel Tower are also from reclaimed wood. The CaesarStone countertop is made from 24% recycled content (crushed glass and mirror). The vintage medicine cabinet was given a fresh coat of paint. The custom tile and marble recessed niche in the bathtub provides plenty of space for the family's stuff. Lighting was improved with the addition of a wet location recessed light in the tub and a pair of wall sconces. White subway tile, accents of muted glass mosaics, Carrara marble basketweave floor tile and the water/sky colored walls and ceiling all contribute to a cheerful and calm brightness. Photo: Wing Wong

A professional couple asked IFA to turn a 2,100 square-foot penthouse in a converted 1890s warehouse building into a modern pied-a-terre. A layered wall of wood, glass, steel, and drywall mediates between the private and public spaces. This wall connects the entire apartment, from the upstairs where it defines the study and guest room to the western facade where it dissolves into glass to offer an expansive view of the Hudson River. Dramatically cantilevered from this wall is a steel staircase offering an overview of the great room. Crowning the larger stairwell is a new skylight bringing daylight to the rear of the apartment.

A spacious colonial in the heart of the waterfront community of Greenhaven still had its original 1950s kitchen. A renovation without an addition added space by reconfiguring, and the wall between kitchen and family room was removed to create open flow. A beautiful banquette was built where the family can enjoy breakfast overlooking the pool. Kitchen Design: Studio Dearborn. Interior decorating by Lorraine Levinson. All appliances: Thermador. Countertops: Pental Quartz Lattice. Hardware: Top Knobs Chareau Series Emerald Pulls and knobs. Stools and pendant lights: West Elm. Photography: Jeff McNamara
