Removing a Wall the Right Way Enhances Family Living and Traffic Flow

Traditional Kitchen, Minneapolis

The existing kitchen was out of date and confined. Bridgewater “gutted the kitchen” and with a clean sheet of paper, designed an expanded, open kitchen that will serve the owner’s family well. The original electric stove used a combination microwave oven and vent, which did little more than make noise and filter out some of the oils. The new design relocates a 5-burner gas range and range hood to an outside wall that made the installation of an outdoor-vented range hood possible. White appliances were replaced with stainless steel, adding two commercial quality ovens to the mix along with a larger microwave oven aside. With this configuration, making dinner is much easier and requires fewer steps and none across a high traffic area (avoiding the occasional child looking for more play time at your feet). The kitchen’s original tile floor was replaced with a solid oak floor in a dark stain. And to make it easier to keep floors clean, there’s a spot for shoes just outside the kitchen. The dark floor is the perfect complement to white flat-panel cabinets, Cambria countertops and white ceramic tile backsplashes. The existing two-tub kitchen sink was replaced with an under-mounted single tub farm sink, popular these days for those looking for a farmhouse look. The kitchen was expanded to include both existing windows with views to the back yard. Finally, the Cambria peninsula serves as a great place for informal dining and snacking while providing ample storage below. The family is delighted with the remodeling project. It gives them a safe, open environment to enjoy family life.
