Thoughts on Downspout Placement? Am I Being Too Picky?

We just had gutters installed today, but I am really perturbed by the placement of this downspout on the front of our house.

I don't recall discussing putting a downspout there; I could have sworn the contractor and I discussed connecting both garages with one continuous gutter and a downspout on the side of the house. There are two other houses like mine in the neighborhood, and neither one have the extra downspout on the front (they have the one gutter/downspout set-up.)

Am I being overly picky, or is my concern about aesthetics valid?

I would not like it, but most importantly you are paying for it and do not like it. We live in the Chicago area and that would make a nice ice covered driveway here. Stand your ground unless they can prove that it is necessary

I can see why you'd be disappointed that it's different than what you expected... and I'm pretty picky myself... but I think that it looks great. It blends into the house very well and it's not obtrusive at all in my opinion.

It's a non issue IMO, looks fine to me.

Aesthetically, I think it looks fine, but I definitely wouldn't like it there mainly because all that rain water is going to come pouring out all over the driveway every time it rains and over time the concrete will look stained. Also, water will be flooding all over your feet if you get out of your car during a storm.

You have different rooflines and different front walls, so the builder has no choice. What he's done will ensure proper drainage from each roof.

without a photo of the full front of the house, i cant say what the alternative is. but if you live in a cold climate, an ice floe will be a problem.

A contractor friend of mine, while remodeling my bathroom, noticed how my the placement of my downspout was causing corrosion in my driveway. I have extensions on them, so we stretched them out to divert the water onto the lawn. From your photo, water is directed right into the seam of your concrete, which is definitely go to cause a problem!

I noticed that your downspouts do not connect to the drain pipe. Has this been a problem for you due to the water continuously running over the concrete resulting in moss, slippery surfaces, ugly water marks on the concrete and potentially concrete cracking more?

Wow! This has been a very informative group of comments...thanks to all 8 of you going back to 2017. I’m from Southern California, now in Michigan, and I will be checking my downspouts well before the first snow!
