From a distance watermelon looks almost identical to Solanum rostratum, Buffalo Bur.

Juvenile plants can be hard to tell apart. ;-)

You can feel the difference though. Ouch.

Spines, Solanaceae petal shape and central stamens were identifying signs in the first picture.

I never noticed the spines in the first picture, but they are in there, good eye! :-)

Although many vegetable/fruit vines have a heavy pubescence which could've been mistaken for spines to an untrained eye.
