reducing echo in large spaces ?

We recently moved into our newly built house. I need some helpful ideas to reduce the echo. Everything is noisy, and can be heard through the whole house. it is a tin roof with high ceiling with exposed beams. it's an open plan living,lounge, dining and kitchen. If I turn the kettle on I can't hear the television for example.
Does anyone have any clever ideas of what I could do?? help

Rugs and thick drapery (they can sit outside the window itself)- soft goods help a lot as the sound bounces around inside. Your roof will always make the house a little more interesting in a rain storm, but right now you are just trying to lessen the hard surfaces.

thank you for your comment, I'll start the search for the right rugs. I suppose it will get a bit better as we get more furniture and decor, but it will always be a bit noisy. I don't really like indoor plants but was wondering of that could help a bit too.
