Room of the Day: Childhood Bedroom Is Redone for Visiting Son
A couple’s adult son and his new wife now can stay in luxe personalized quarters when they’re in town
This adult man was probably just fine with bunking in his childhood bedroom when visiting his parents. However, his mother wanted to make sure her son’s new bride felt comfortable when making the trek from New York City to St. Louis to visit. She tasked interior designer Maria DeGange with creating a bedroom that had a luxe boutique hotel feel. At the same time, DeGange wanted to keep some things around that would make the son feel at home, so she incorporated his childhood collection of jazz photography and posters into the chic design.
BEFORE: The room hadn’t changed much since the clients’ son was a teenager, except for collecting some of the couple’s castoffs.
AFTER: Their son is a jazz aficionado who collected jazz-related art during his teen years. “It was a challenge to arrange the artwork in a way that wasn’t disjointed because there were black-and-white photographs, colorful posters and more,” DeGange says. She found a few Art Deco-Jazz Age grilles to throw into the mix and make the gallery wall more cohesive. Adding to the challenge were the old plaster walls, which didn’t always accept nails in the desired places. “My designer’s eye wishes the wall was arranged just perfectly, but it wasn’t possible here, and it still works,” she says.
She found a spot for another poster above the high dresser from Stanley Furniture.
Funky metallic accents also add personality to the room.
A comfy chair and ottoman combined with a side table and floor lamp create a cozy reading corner. “The chair and ottoman came from Our House Designs, a company in North Carolina that makes beautiful high-quality leather furniture,” DeGange says.

Next to the reading corner, a desk serves double duty as a dressing table. An elegant Bernhardt mirror adds to the boutique hotel feel. Its shape picks up on the quatrefoil pattern on the rug.
A bench at the end of the bed is a perfect spot for putting on shoes and setting down luggage. A cozy throw with a long fringe adds another comfortable touch.
The homeowner added one last personal detail to welcome her new daughter-in-law to her home — a cheeky pillow that says “Mrs. Always Right.”
