Living room - mid-sized transitional open concept dark wood floor and brown floor living room idea in Nashville with white walls, a standard fireplace and a wall-mounted tv
Altura Architects
The main level at this modern farmhouse has a great room and den bookended by stone fireplaces. The kitchen is at the center of the main living spaces where we designed multiple islands for smart base cabinet storage which still allows visual connection from the kitchen to all spaces. The open living spaces serve the owner’s desire to create a comfortable environment for entertaining during large family gatherings. There are plenty of spaces where everyone can spread out whether it be eating or cooking, watching TV or just chatting by the fireplace. The main living spaces also act as a privacy buffer between the master suite and a guest suite.

While two-story rooms offer abundant natural light, they can feel cold due to the shear scale. We transformed this new space into a comfortable and elegant gathering place for a family that loves to entertain.

The Living Room is one of the first rooms seen right off the entry so the interior design demanded something unique. Strong color was added and curves in furnishings and patterns to offset all the rectangular shapes so the room is softer. This room sets the stage for what is to come throughout. Not your typical "only neutral colors" seen in most Modern Farmhouse architecture, they are there, but there is a layer of specifically selected colors added. The color palette moves you through the entire house utilizing different percentages of selected colors so each room feels like its own design but holds together with all other rooms.
Normandy Remodeling
This open family room is part of a larger addition to this Oak Park home, which also included a new kitchen and a second floor master suite. This project was designed and executed by award winning Normandy Designer Stephanie Bryant. The coferred ceilings and limestone fireplace surround add visual interest and elegance to this living room space. The soft blue color of the ceiling enhances the visual interest even further.

Schrader & Companies
This French Classic Mansard home needed a delicate hand and keen eye to detail when it owners were ready to remodel. That's exactly what Schrader & Companies, BATC's Remodeler-of-the-Year, brought to the job. They began by keeping the original structure and architecture true, but updated with energy-efficient Marvin windows and a new front door.
Then moved inside. The owners wanted a modern, livable home that suited the way they live today. Schrader came through by melding state-of-the-art products and materials with a style that can be described as traditional transitional European. The result is a home that seamlessly balances aesthetics and function.
Step in the front entrance to the open stairwell, which is designed to showcase detailed custom iron balusters and a balcony overlooking the foyer. Repurposing the old laundry room into a functional mudroom enhanced the family entrance.
The truly modern kitchen looks as beautiful as it cooks. A 48-inch Wolf range is set off by a lavish François & Co. stone backsplash and very detailed custom cabinets and millwork. An elaborate island and 60-inch armoire Sub-Zero refrigerator complete the look.
Next, Schrader opened up the kitchen to a spacious dining room addition. Guests will be impressed by the barrel-vaulted ceilings and custom arched window that overlooks the wooded backyard. The family room features a detailed, custom entertainment system housing a flat screen TV and a see-through fireplace framed with an arch that peeks into the living room. And what French home would be without a beautiful grand piano music room.
The upper-level owners' suite is a delight, with added cabinetry and coz sitting room with its own fireplace. And down the hall, a firth bedroom was transformed into a large and truly convenient laundry room.
The lower level wasn't ignored, and boasts a temperature-controlled wine cellar, sunroom with arched opening, media room with another fireplace, as well as a study with custom-made desk and extensive cabinetry.

A crisp and consistent color scheme and composition creates an airy, unified mood throughout the diminutive 13' x 13' living room. Dark hardwood floors add warmth and contrast. We added thick moldings to architecturally enhance the house.
Gauzy cotton Roman shades dress new hurricane-proof windows and coax additional natural light into the home. Because of their versatility, pairs of furniture instead of single larger pieces are used throughout the home. This helps solve the space problem because these smaller pieces can be moved and stored easily.

Hufft
The Porch House located just west of Springfield, Missouri, presented Hufft Projects with a unique challenge. The clients desired a residence that referenced the traditional forms of farmhouses but also spoke to something distinctly modern. A hybrid building emerged and the Porch House greets visitors with its namesake – a large east and south facing ten foot cantilevering canopy that provides dramatic cover.
The residence also commands a view of the expansive river valley to the south. L-shaped in plan, the house’s master suite is located in the western leg and is isolated away from other functions allowing privacy. The living room, dining room, and kitchen anchor the southern, more traditional wing of the house with its spacious vaulted ceilings. A chimney punctuates this area and features a granite clad fireplace on the interior and an exterior fireplace expressing split face concrete block. Photo Credit: Mike Sinclair

This is an original historic mirror which was re-framed and integrated with the custom designed painted wood surround and mantel of the new gas fireplace. Carrara marble frames the metal fireplace and serves as the hearth.

Although Gayle's favorite summertime spot is in the back sun porch, it is the living room that gets her vote throughout the cold months, thanks to the wood-burning fireplace. "Need I say more?!", she jokes.
The feeling of the space is akin to an elegant lodge, with a cut stone hearth and plenty of wood. Gary splits logs to stack alongside the fireplace, which brings both form and function to the arrangement.
