The family room stands where the old carport once stood. We re-used and modified the existing roof structure to create a relief from the otherwise 8'-0" ceilings in this home.

Conceived as a remodel and addition, the final design iteration for this home is uniquely multifaceted. Structural considerations required a more extensive tear down, however the clients wanted the entire remodel design kept intact, essentially recreating much of the existing home. The overall floor plan design centers on maximizing the views, while extensive glazing is carefully placed to frame and enhance them. The residence opens up to the outdoor living and views from multiple spaces and visually connects interior spaces in the inner court. The client, who also specializes in residential interiors, had a vision of ‘transitional’ style for the home, marrying clean and contemporary elements with touches of antique charm. Energy efficient materials along with reclaimed architectural wood details were seamlessly integrated, adding sustainable design elements to this transitional design. The architect and client collaboration strived to achieve modern, clean spaces playfully interjecting rustic elements throughout the home.

In the hills of San Anselmo in Marin County, this 5,000 square foot existing multi-story home was enlarged to 6,000 square feet with a new dance studio addition with new master bedroom suite and sitting room for evening entertainment and morning coffee. Sited on a steep hillside one acre lot, the back yard was unusable. New concrete retaining walls and planters were designed to create outdoor play and lounging areas with stairs that cascade down the hill forming a wrap-around walkway. The goal was to make the new addition integrate the disparate design elements of the house and calm it down visually. The scope was not to change everything, just the rear façade and some of the side facades.
The new addition is a long rectangular space inserted into the rear of the building with new up-swooping roof that ties everything together. Clad in red cedar, the exterior reflects the relaxed nature of the one acre wooded hillside site. Fleetwood windows and wood patterned tile complete the exterior color material palate.
The sitting room overlooks a new patio area off of the children’s playroom and features a butt glazed corner window providing views filtered through a grove of bay laurel trees. Inside is a television viewing area with wetbar off to the side that can be closed off with a concealed pocket door to the master bedroom. The bedroom was situated to take advantage of these views of the rear yard and the bed faces a stone tile wall with recessed skylight above. The master bath, a driving force for the project, is large enough to allow both of them to occupy and use at the same time.
The new dance studio and gym was inspired for their two daughters and has become a facility for the whole family. All glass, mirrors and space with cushioned wood sports flooring, views to the new level outdoor area and tree covered side yard make for a dramatic turnaround for a home with little play or usable outdoor space previously.

Fully integrated into its elevated home site, this modern residence offers a unique combination of privacy from adjacent homes. The home’s graceful contemporary exterior features natural stone, corten steel, wood and glass — all in perfect alignment with the site. The design goal was to take full advantage of the views of Lake Calhoun that sits within the city of Minneapolis by providing homeowners with expansive walls of Integrity Wood-Ultrex® windows. With a small footprint and open design, stunning views are present in every room, making the stylish windows a huge focal point of the home.

“Feels very confident and fluent. Love the contrast between first and second floor, both in material and volume. Excellent modern composition.”
This Gatineau Hills home creates a beautiful balance between modern and natural. The natural house design embraces its earthy surroundings, while opening the door to a contemporary aesthetic. The open ground floor, with its interconnected spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows, allows sunlight to flow through uninterrupted, showcasing the beauty of the natural light as it varies throughout the day and by season.
The façade of reclaimed wood on the upper level, white cement board lining the lower, and large expanses of floor-to-ceiling windows throughout are the perfect package for this chic forest home. A warm wood ceiling overhead and rustic hand-scraped wood floor underfoot wrap you in nature’s best.
Marvin’s floor-to-ceiling windows invite in the ever-changing landscape of trees and mountains indoors. From the exterior, the vertical windows lead the eye upward, loosely echoing the vertical lines of the surrounding trees. The large windows and minimal frames effectively framed unique views of the beautiful Gatineau Hills without distracting from them. Further, the windows on the second floor, where the bedrooms are located, are tinted for added privacy. Marvin’s selection of window frame colors further defined this home’s contrasting exterior palette. White window frames were used for the ground floor and black for the second floor.

GIL WALSH INTERIORS
An accomplished potter and her husband own this Vineyard Haven summer house.
Gil Walsh worked with the couple to build the house’s décor around the wife’s artistic aesthetic and her pottery collection. (She has a pottery shed (studio) with a
kiln). They wanted their summer home to be a relaxing home for their family and friends.
The main entrance to this home leads directly to the living room, which spans the width of the house, from the small entry foyer to the oceanfront porch.
Opposite the living room behind the fireplace is a combined kitchen and dining space.
All the colors that were selected throughout the home are the organic colors she (the owner) uses in her pottery. (The architect was Patrick Ahearn).

A custom bookcase for cookbook collection was built from recycled wood. Maker was found at a local home show in Portland. All furniture pieces were made or found and selected/designed maximizing height to accentuate tall ceilings. The vestibule in the background shows tiny space added by new nib walls as entry way to existing bathroom. The large living room was divided into several areas: game table, reading area, center table and main sitting/TV area. All white/neutral upholstery is tempered with the use of textures and wood. A custom game table has cup holder pull-outs to keep the card playing surface free of clutter. The bookshelves boast a collection of found items, family photos and books. The center table was sized to sit below the lantern and to be large enough to fill the space but small enough to not interfere with navigating the room.

We were delighted to remodel the kitchen of our CEO’s home . The tiny kitchen was hanging on by a thread. We blew out a wall incorporating the dining room into the space and added a new sunny dining room off the back of the home. The warm wood cabinets and black accents fit with the style of the home and the personality of our home owners. We hope you find them inspiring.
