Sited on a sloping and densely wooded lot along the Potomac River in the Falcon Ridge neighborhood where exceptional architecture on large, verdant lots is the norm, the owners of this new home required a plan flexible enough to accommodate a growing family, a variety of in-home entertainment options, and recreational pursuits for children and their friends. Stylistically, our clients desired an historic aesthetic reminiscent of an English baronial manor that projects the traditional values and culture of Virginia and Washington D.C. In short, this is a trophy home meant to convey power, status and wealth. Due to site constraints, house size, and a basement sport court, we employed a straightforward structural scheme overlaid with a highly detailed exterior and interior envelope.
Featuring six fireplaces, coffered ceilings, a two-story entry foyer complete with a custom entry door, our solution employs a series of formally organized principal rooms overlooking private terraces and a large tract of pre-civil war Black Walnut trees. The large formal living area, dubbed the Hunt Room, is the home’s show piece space and is finished with cherry wainscoting, a Rumford fireplace, media center, full wet bar, antique-glass cabinetry and two sets of French doors leading to an outdoor dining terrace. The Kitchen features floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, top of the line appliances, walk-in pantry and a family-dining area. The sunken family room boasts custom built-ins, expansive picture windows, wood-burning fireplace and access to the conservatory which warehouses a grand piano in a radiused window bay overlooking the side yard.

We had the pleasure of working with the new homeowners to design further improvements to the house necessitated by their growing family. We added a porte cochere, a family-room, and increased the ceiling height in their master bedroom. These improvements augmented our design work previously completed in 2008, and the house continues to be a blend of traditional old-house details with modern, contemporary furnishings that perfectly suite a family with young children.

The clients, a young professional couple with 2 small children, had purchased a very old house in an established Bellevue neighborhood. The goal of this project was to create a space which would accommodate this growing family by raising the roof line and adding to the footprint. Semi-custom Canadian cabinetry line was specified for the kitchen and all the bathrooms, glass tile in 3 colors mixed in sporadically as well as hand-blown Italian glass pendants enhanced the kitchen and brought clients beloved color in an whimsical way....The final result is a beautiful contemporary space my clients will love and enjoy for years to come.

Replaced old pressure treated floor and wood railings of a 20 x 12 foot deck and expanded deck by constructing a adjacent 7 x 12 area of decking and interrogated floor and railings to make a seamless larger deck to accommodate growing extended as grand children and their parents come to join the homeowner for the holidays and the beach.
Addressed safety issues by making sure the old frame of existing deck was solid and added several lag bolts to secure the existing deck to the wall and added a second set of bolts to existing rail posts for added safety to hold larger gatherings, as building safety codes have improved since the original deck was originally constructed. The rail is Azek Premier, the Floor is Azek, The skirt is 1x10 Azek, but still had the protective plastic coating on it when I took these photos, hence the blue spots.

Leopold's parents wanted to create a bright jungle inspired space for him to sleep and play. We painted the lower half of the room green complete with mountain peaks, the upper half off white creating an illusion of a higher ceiling and a neutral backdrop to a bold jungle mural. As well as specifying furniture and accessories to work with items already owned by the client, I also created a space plan that can be adapted easily as Leopold grows!

VISION AND NEEDS:
Our client came to us with a vision for their dream house for their growing family with three young children. This was their second attempt at getting the right design. The first time around, after working with an out-of-state online architect, they could not achieve the level of quality they wanted. McHugh delivered a home with higher quality design.
MCHUGH SOLUTION:
The Shingle/Dutch Colonial Design was our client's dream home style. Their priorities were to have a home office for both parents. Ample living space for kids and friends, along with outdoor space and a pool. Double sink bathroom for the kids and a master bedroom with bath for the parents. Despite being close a flood zone, clients could have a fully finished basement with 9ft ceilings and a full attic. Because of the higher water table, the first floor was considerably above grade. To soften the ascent of the front walkway, we designed planters around the stairs, leading up to the porch.

Located on a heritage-lined street in Melbourne’s Williamstown, a young family were seeking a contemporary home with ample room to grow. Benni Trajcevski of Achieve Design Group answered their call, creating the epitome of modern living concealed behind a modest façade. To achieve the long wish list including large indoor and outdoor gathering spaces to entertain family and friends, separate adult and children living and sleeping zones, and a pool suitable for year-round use, Benni has maximised every inch of the block. Seamless transitional spaces link inside with out. This flow between the indoors and outdoors is a key feature of the home, achieved through generous open floor planning and glazing. For example, large hidden sliding doors allow the pool to be closed-off for use in winter; acrylic glass panels link the pool with the sunken lounge, which includes a fire pit for year-round comfort. The inclusion of a courtyard and voids throughout create separate useable zones while maintaining the feeling of spaciousness. Orientated to the north and surrounded with floor to ceiling windows to optimise natural light, the courtyard divides the formal lounge area with the informal living area, while the first floor is divided into four separate wings for privacy and functionality. The interiors are detailed with quality materials and finishes to achieve a sleek and sophisticated aesthetic. Contrasting materials in muted tones, including tiles, steel and lightweight timbers are featured throughout. Corian and a moss green wall are unexpected features.
Moontower
Situated under a 75 year old oak tree, this charming brick veneer wood frame home in a historic central Austin neighborhood was lovingly inhabited by a growing young family. Additional children gave rise to a need for more space. A long-ago screen porch addition had served previous homeowners and this family well until baby number two was due. Anticipating the need for more elbow room the parents, Chase and Helen, asked Moontower to reclaim their screen porch (which was perfect three months of the year but kind of dusty twelve months of the year) and connect it to their kitchen and existing living room. The big idea was to make a comfortable place for lounging with the kids or having a family dinner.
A cabinet makeover, integrating new wood floors with old, incorporating cozy arch-way details into the tranistional spaces, and building a new back porch to provide a comfortable back entrance to the new space all helped round out the family wish list. The unique large dimensional lumber framing of the screen porch held a special place in the owner's hearts and became a design element to be preserved in the rennovation. Built up insulation above the roof deck and a mini split system to heat and cool the space without ducts to clutter the exposed framing in the ceiling provided a clear solution to the major design/build goal of preserving the casual feel to the former screen porch while integrating it functionally and seamlessly with the rest of the house.
Using a simple palette of painted wood shiplap, a common building material of pre-war houses in Austin, and continuing the species and finish of the wood floors in the house tie old and new together. The ship lap also provided the inspiration to do a custom air register to conceal the wall mounted air handler behind perforated wood panels integrated into the wood wall covering, lining the former screen porch. This provided an alternative to the drywall throughout the existing house while allowing the former exterior wall and new construction to be covered and integrated with a material that could absorb any structural settling as the add-hoc nature of the building evolved over time.

Contemporary landscape design offers a grand simplicity to this English traditional cottage in West University, Houston. Paving with clean lines and artificial turf replace what was a muddy, underutilized space. A concrete walk frames the children's play lawn and offers a path for bikes. Fig ivy will grow to cover the fence adding a green, textured backdrop to a shady dining area. Eclectic pottery brings a pop of color while bistro seating against a confederate jasmine vine offers a tranquil setting for morning coffee.

Our clients for this project were to move back into the Victorian terraced house they bought before their children arrived, having rented it out for the past 20 years. With the kids now growing up and a return planned for the next stage of life, the house was in need of a full refurbishment and a well earnt contemporary extension.
The new proposals at ground floor level started at the back. Here there was the opportunity to radically transform a pokey outrigger kitchen into a larger sociable kitchen and dining space, opening out to the garden. The extension design is built around a large solid oak lined settle, which is a recessed bench reminiscent of traditional settle benches. The settle has concealed storage below, with hinged seat panels to provide access.
The kitchen was custom made to the clients specifications, and incorporates a movable island unit to enable them to set this piece against the wall at the back of the kitchen when hosting parties. A simple jack and trolley system ensures this can be moved, fully loaded, in a matter of minutes.
The settle is located below two openable roof lights, which sit on top of dramatically chamfered oak lined reveals. The design provides at once a practical ventilation strategy, minimal overlooking from neighbours, and a warm materiality that works alongside an abundance of natural light. The oak lining to the settle and roof light reveals continue in a third element, the window seat looking out to the garden. This has a cat flap and litter storage below, and a fixed picture window set within the deep brick reveals.
It was decided early on that the extension would be in brickwork, to complement the existing array of brick structures at the back of the property. A pale handmade brick was chosen, with colour matched mortar and flush pointing, giving a sense of mass and monumentality to the exposed columns and walls used internally and externally. Combined with the oak, we agreed with the clients to ensure a long lasting and timeless aesthetic to take the house through the next 30 years and beyond. Natural stone flooring was chosen by the clients to complement the brickwork, used inside and out.
The front of the ground floor incorporates a petrol green reading room, with bespoke shelving and panelling to create a cosy library space to complement the first floor reception room. The hallway is reconfigured to allow space for a cloakroom and wc, with classic mosaic tiling to both the hallway floor inside and the entrance path. Period features such as new conservation box sash windows and classic skirtings and architraves were re-introduced to restore the house to its former grandeur.
The full refurbishment stretches through all three storeys of the house, predominantly in a restrained classic style within the original house. There are contemporary accents linking the interior scheme to the new extension, through the incorporation of oak joinery and a new staircase leading to loft storage space within the top floor master suite.

When they first purchased the home, the owners didn't think they'd need to renovate. But with two growing girls, they eventually realized that the house didn't fully suit their needs. While cooking, they couldn't keep an eye on the children as they played in the living room on the other side of the house. We designed a 325 sf addition that expanded the kitchen and added a family room and powder room. Renovations were also made to the adjacent mudroom including plenty of built-in storage.

Consolidated space unable to grow natural turf now becomes a functional yard area for children and pets

Cedar shakes mix with siding and stone to create a richly textural Craftsman exterior. This floor plan is ideal for large or growing families with open living spaces making it easy to be together. The master suite and a bedroom/study are downstairs while three large bedrooms with walk-in closets are upstairs. A second-floor pocket office is a great space for children to complete homework or projects and a bonus room provides additional square footage for recreation or storage.

This living room was a blank slate, waiting to be filled in with texture and color. With a family room on the other side of the house for tv watching and game playing, we wanted to create a grown up space for when the Mr. and Mrs. entertain their friends. With white walls, a wood mantle and a single Shabby Chic white couch, this room was open to endless possibilities to update and sophisticate!
We choose a subtle grey for the walls which was soothing and neutral, but added a much needed warmth. Vintage chinoiserie pots we scored on one of our hunts are a work of art in themselves. Raised on wooden pedestals, these fig leaf trees make great house plants and will continue to grow filling out the space with fresh greenery.
The existing couch in the room was white with huge arms and big floppy cushions. It was in need of some TLC and updating. By modernizing the existing frame, it became a comfy Chesterfield in fresh natural woven linen. The tufting of the couch elevates the look without sacrificing the comfort. Our clients loved it so much, we did a second couch to match giving them plenty of seating to chat and enjoy cocktails. A vintage rug loaded with beautiful colors is grounded by the neutrality of the furniture. The mantle was painted in a rich dark grey that matched the veins in the marble hearth and looks like it’s own framed work of art.
When deciding on what to do with the blank walls, she showed us some of her daughter’s recent artwork. We were totally inspired with what we saw. What a treasure to have such talent! We suggested a gallery wall, framing each masterpiece, in different vintage frames. A mix of sizes and patterns look super chic when all done in a uniform color. With touches of brass throughout the room, gilded with gold was the way to go. One of our favorite finds – a brass swan, became the perfect unexpected vase for fresh tulips. A bone tray is a beautiful contrast to the vintage coffee table we lacquered in black and inlaid with beveled smokey mirror. The finishing touches were the pieces to finish off the fireplace. I always love a lion, a protector of the house. We snatched up this beautiful marble and brass fire tool set the minute we saw it and the rest is history. A beautiful space to relax and entertain, while showing off their very own art gallery. Foster the creativity within your children, and everyone will reap the benefits.
