This outdoor media room and kitchen had to meet the needs of a Houston family needing kid space and adult space.
The kids wanted an outdoor audio visual area watch TV and movies. The grownups wanted an outdoor kitchen, bar and grilling area where they could enjoy themselves while watching the kids. And they all wanted a covered patio with places to sit between dips in the pool.
However, the family had very limited space between the back of their house and their pool, and no room for anything in either of the side yards:
Stringent homeowner association rules also required that any home modifications match the existing home's architecture, color and finishing materials. The pitch of the roof also had to be such that it didn't overlap the bottom of the second-story windows above.
So here's what we came up with: A 40-foot-long by 11-foot- deep roof extension off the back of the house (longer than most, but with good engineering specs and design work, we were able to preserve the structural integrity):
At one end of the covered patio below is a 12-foot by 8-foot outdoor living room with a custom audio-visual cabinet. At the other is an L-shaped, 8-foot-square outdoor kitchen island with a built-in commercial-grade RCS grill, a 4-by-8-foot outdoor refrigerator and a outdoor icemaker.
Keeping in line with the existing home's beige siding, white trim and brown accent façade, we helped the homeowner choose appropriate finishing materials: Austin Western limestone (mostly white with beige accents) for the TV cabinet, kitchen island and column supports; Old English travertine (beige) for the countertops) and white, fluted columns.
The Old English travertine countertop has a raised back for a bar with counter seating. The diamond-pattern tile backsplash also features inset fleur de lis accents.
The family is more than pleased with the results - two outdoor rooms with two different functions - all within the same covered outdoor living space!

This project was initially a main floor renovation – the kitchen was old and dated and the layout was poor for entertaining.
Sounds simple enough, but it was only achieved by removing a trap door and the original external basement stairs and building a new side entrance to the lower level. From our first meeting I knew that the trap door was going to be the boss of the renovation – sometimes it’s the oddest things in a home that determine the course, size and scope of a project. We increased the size of the main floor by levelling of the back of the house; this increased the foot print in the kitchen and brought in much more natural light. Custom millwork and plaster mouldings were designed and installed in every room. Lighting was updated and new furniture and soft-furnishings were designed and sourced. On the second floor we renovated the master bedroom and the dressing room. In the basement we dug down, greatly improving the head height and formed a cozy media room and a lux laundry and mudroom.

The principal challenge was to design a usable space that provided seating for 25 in a confined area that also addressed aesthetics, maintenance, drainage and slope stabilization.
The long narrow space, (approximately 9 x 60’) is located at the bottom of a 40% slope in an environmental critical area. A 3' to 6' high rockery is one side and the back façade of the house on the other side. A 3' wide pathway is the only exterior access to the project. The site was moss covered, wet, dark and subject to high litter trees.
In order to maximize space and stabilize the rockery sit walls were designed into the existing rockery. A wide curved sit wall cups a 1/2-moon shaped patio extends from the interior living room. An L-shaped sit wall creates alfresco dining off the kitchen. The hardscapes slope toward custom drains in front of the sit walls, eliminating standing water. Low voltage lighting and cream colored concrete brighten the landscape. Concrete paving provides a low maintenance surface and a project with longevity. The end result is a highly functional, successful outdoor room enjoyed from the inside and the outside.
The client wanted a water feature as a focal point. The difficulty was how to incorporate it into the landscape so that it would not undermine the rockery. Without machines the pipes and equipment would have to be in front of or on top the rockery. How would we hide the equipment? How would get the water up to the top of the rockery without moving any of boulders?
The solution was uniquely innovative. The designer hand selected a large triangular shaped 4” flagstone then drew lines on the stone with chalk where to carve a river into the face the stone. The artisan then chiseled this stone into a custom weir that would direct the water away from the rockery and fall into a basin of Mexican pebble. A second large piece of stone was secured vertically under the direction of the designer on site to hide the liner and the pipe. Both stones were doweled into the rockery. The effect of the water falling is like a series of ever changing diamond shaped due to the rough cut of the face of the stone.

An enchanting mix of materials highlights this 2,500-square-foot design. A light-filled center entrance connects the main living areas on the roomy first floor with an attached two-car garage in this inviting, four bedroom, five-and-a-half bath abode. A large fireplace warms the hearth room, which is open to the dining and sitting areas. Nearby are a screened-in porch and a family-friendly kitchen. Upstairs are two bedrooms, a great room and bunk room; downstairs you’ll find a traditional gathering room, exercise area and guest bedroom.

Clients wanted to keep a powder room on the first floor and desired to relocate it away from kitchen and update the look. We needed to minimize the powder room footprint and tuck it into a service area instead of an open public area.
We minimize the footprint and tucked the PR across from the basement stair which created a small ancillary room and buffer between the adjacent rooms. We used a small wall hung basin to make the small room feel larger by exposing more of the floor footprint. Wainscot paneling was installed to create balance, scale and contrasting finishes.
The new powder room exudes simple elegance from the polished nickel hardware, rich contrast and delicate accent lighting. The space is comfortable in scale and leaves you with a sense of eloquence.

When our client requested a cozy retreat for her study, we re-configured a narrow 6’ x 12’ space off the Master Bedroom hall. By combining 2 separate rooms, a dated wet bar and a stackable washer/dryer area, we captured the square footage needed for the Study. As someone who likes to spread out and have multiple projects going on at the same time, we designed the L-shaped work surface and created the functionality she longed for. A tall storage cabinet just wide enough to house her files and printer, anchors one end while an oversized ‘found’ vintage bracket adorns the other, giving openness to an otherwise tight space. Previously separated by a wall, the 2 windows now bring cheerful natural light into the singular space. Thick floating shelves above the work surface feature LED strip lighting which is especially enticing at night. A sliding metal chalkboard opposite of the worksurface is easily accessible and provides a fun way to keep track of daily activities. The black and cream “star” patterned floor tile adds a bit of whimsy to the Study and compliments the rustic charm of the family’s antique cowhide chair. What is not to love about the compact yet inviting space?
