This kitchen was formerly a dark paneled, cluttered, and divided space with little natural light. By eliminating partitions and creating a more functional, open floorplan, as well as adding modern windows with traditional detailing, providing lovingly detailed built-ins for the clients extensive collection of beautiful dishes, and lightening up the color palette we were able to create a rather miraculous transformation. The wide plank salvaged pine floors, the antique french dining table, as well as the Galbraith & Paul drum pendant and the salvaged antique glass monopoint track pendants all help to provide a warmth to the crisp detailing.

Amazing Spaces
This is a great house. Perched high on a private, heavily wooded site, it has a rustic contemporary aesthetic. Vaulted ceilings, sky lights, large windows and natural materials punctuate the main spaces. The existing large format mosaic slate floor grabs your attention upon entering the home extending throughout the foyer, kitchen, and family room.
Specific requirements included a larger island with workspace for each of the homeowners featuring a homemade pasta station which requires small appliances on lift-up mechanisms as well as a custom-designed pasta drying rack. Both chefs wanted their own prep sink on the island complete with a garbage “shoot” which we concealed below sliding cutting boards. A second and overwhelming requirement was storage for a large collection of dishes, serving platters, specialty utensils, cooking equipment and such. To meet those needs we took the opportunity to get creative with storage: sliding doors were designed for a coffee station adjacent to the main sink; hid the steam oven, microwave and toaster oven within a stainless steel niche hidden behind pantry doors; added a narrow base cabinet adjacent to the range for their large spice collection; concealed a small broom closet behind the refrigerator; and filled the only available wall with full-height storage complete with a small niche for charging phones and organizing mail. We added 48” high base cabinets behind the main sink to function as a bar/buffet counter as well as overflow for kitchen items.
The client’s existing vintage commercial grade Wolf stove and hood commands attention with a tall backdrop of exposed brick from the fireplace in the adjacent living room. We loved the rustic appeal of the brick along with the existing wood beams, and complimented those elements with wired brushed white oak cabinets. The grayish stain ties in the floor color while the slab door style brings a modern element to the space. We lightened the color scheme with a mix of white marble and quartz countertops. The waterfall countertop adjacent to the dining table shows off the amazing veining of the marble while adding contrast to the floor. Special materials are used throughout, featured on the textured leather-wrapped pantry doors, patina zinc bar countertop, and hand-stitched leather cabinet hardware. We took advantage of the tall ceilings by adding two walnut linear pendants over the island that create a sculptural effect and coordinated them with the new dining pendant and three wall sconces on the beam over the main sink.

Heaven is another destination infused with wonder. If you enter beneath the gnarled winding tea tree, you are experiencing the designer’s intention. “The tree canopy provides a ceiling to the space, the scent and magnificence of the adjacent eucalyptus the protection, and the peaceful, zen spirit probably lowers your heart rate.”

This Encinitas home was completely remodelled and included a substantial addon. The French COuntry kitchen, being the heart of the home, increased to twice the original size and featured luxurious appliances and finishes..
Wooden cabinets, with beautiful glass front wrap the kitchen, while the dramatic island was designed to stand as a piece of furniture and is home to a magnificent cooktop. The extra wide peninsula has room enough for ample seating.
Beautiful lighting, magnificent travertine flooring and ample cabinet space makes this kitchen a center hub for years to come..

Bruce is the gourmet cook in his family. Surrounded by his girls, his culinary expertise is highly appreciated. He already built a wonderful outdoor barbecue, pizza oven, refrigerator and fireplace adjacent to his outdoor decks and entertainment area. But the kitchen needed help. The home needed other improvements as well and their master bedroom and bath took priority. Bruce patiently waited while his master bedroom and bathroom were remodeled while he dreamed of his new and improved workspace in his kitchen, a wet bar, a walk-in pantry. How about a small sitting area near by where the kids can watch a movie? How about a fireplace too? Bruce and Joy wanted a "retro" look. Forties - ish. A twist on that era but an older style and look to the cabinets and finishes. The kitchen is as bright and cheerful as the talented cook who throws together dinner parties with the ease of Julia Child! The cabinets are custom made and painted in a flat finish for an older feel. The wet bar countertop is a beautiful piece of black marble while the main counter is a bright yellow tile accented with black. Joy said please give me a small desk. A command station for the phone, for messages...and make it close to the garage door! A small built-in desk is conveniently located for the kids to grab their lunches as they race off to school each morning. The nearby walk-in pantry has a screened door - a part of that retro look. The powder room was squeaked into the back corner of the space but it too has an older retro look. Now Bruce is busy looking through his cookbooks and recipes as he finds creative ways to break in his exciting new/retro kitchen...and his girls are close by just waiting! 1058 Redwood Highway | Mill Valley, CA 94941 | phone 415-389-1058 | fax 415-389-1070 6 C Street | Petaluma, CA 94952 | 707-765-0225 ©2005-2008 Mahoney Architects & Interiors. The goal of this project was to build a house that would be energy efficient using materials that were both economical and environmentally conscious. Due to the extremely cold winter weather conditions in the Catskills, insulating the house was a primary concern. The main structure of the house is a timber frame from an nineteenth century barn that has been restored and raised on this new site. The entirety of this frame has then been wrapped in SIPs (structural insulated panels), both walls and the roof. The house is slab on grade, insulated from below. The concrete slab was poured with a radiant heating system inside and the top of the slab was polished and left exposed as the flooring surface. Fiberglass windows with an extremely high R-value were chosen for their green properties. Care was also taken during construction to make all of the joints between the SIPs panels and around window and door openings as airtight as possible. The fact that the house is so airtight along with the high overall insulatory value achieved from the insulated slab, SIPs panels, and windows make the house very energy efficient. The house utilizes an air exchanger, a device that brings fresh air in from outside without loosing heat and circulates the air within the house to move warmer air down from the second floor. Other green materials in the home include reclaimed barn wood used for the floor and ceiling of the second floor, reclaimed wood stairs and bathroom vanity, and an on-demand hot water/boiler system. The exterior of the house is clad in black corrugated aluminum with an aluminum standing seam roof. Because of the extremely cold winter temperatures windows are used discerningly, the three largest windows are on the first floor providing the main living areas with a majestic view of the Catskill mountains.
