Modern Icons: Kartell Componibili Storage Modules
This clever round cabinet works hard as a storage unit, side table or nightstand — and has personality galore
The cute little cylinder-shaped bodies of Componibili storage units have been in homes around the world for more than 40 years. Designed by Anna Castelli Ferrieri in 1969, they remind me of stashing my books and mittens in my cubbyhole in elementary school — and I mean that in a good way. Of course, they have the clever Italian touch; you stick your finger in a round hole in the curved doors and the doors slide open to reveal the compartments.
There are several different configurations for the Componibili; each drawer of the larger system (15⅛ inches high by 16½ inches diameter) and the tray top are sold separately, and you may stack as many drawer units as you like. The stand-alone smaller cabinets simplify the process; you can buy a two- or three-drawer unit that is 12½ inches in diameter as one single piece of furniture (the two-drawer version is 15¾ inches high, and the three-drawer version is 23 inches high). If you're considering a Componibili purchase, take a gander at all the ways to use these pieces in a variety of room types and styles; I hope this will make your decision easier.

Place a three-drawer Componibili next to a favorite reading chair and stash your novels, newspapers, reading specs, coupon case, scissors, crossword puzzles, pens and other unsightly items inside. Add a classic anglepoise lamp on top and you're good to go.
Red adds a playful touch and can hold its own next to a killer racecar bed and giant Union Jack.
The red version is a limited edition, so if you're on the fence about ordering one, you might want to speed up your decision.
Add optional castors to put make your Componibili even more portable.
The cabinet makes a smashing side table in a contemporary room; its curves play off sculptural furnishings.
Three drawers make the larger stand-alone Componibili a very useful modern nightstand, with plenty of space for your flashlight, night mask, love letters and whatever else you keep in there that is none of my business.
Another advantage is its slender profile; if you have just a little over one foot on one side of the bed, you have plenty of room to squeeze one in.
The cabinet fits into more traditional or eclectic bedrooms as well.
The nightstand works not only for little kiddos and adults, but for tweens and teens also. If you invest in one, you'll always find somewhere around the house where you can put it to good use.
The Componibili cabinet is a genius addition to a bathroom that combines vintage and contemporary touches. It brings in iconic Italian modern style, it can hide those extra rolls of T.P., and you can set your towel or a candle on top of it while you soak in the tub.
