“I was introduced to Art Deco via Block Renovation (a design and build firm) as I was looking to update the kitchen and bathroom in my newly purchased coop as well as painting, replacing floors and a few doors --- basically everything in a 1 bedroom apartment :). This was quite a stressful period given we were in the middle of a global pandemic and I am a first time homeowner and was eager to move in and not be paying double for both a mortgage and rent. I found Art Deco to be very professional and great collaborators, responding to my questions via email promptly as well as being available for phone calls. Our large-mid size renovation project officially broke ground in Nov 2020 and completed in 3 months which is incredible given all the possible snafus that could have occurred! Finding a contractor/firm, doing design, getting building approval took roughly the same amount of time and started in late July/August 2020, so the project took in total of about 6 months. Pros: Great tiling work, impressive job with walk-in shower conversion, good kitchen cabinet installation, beautiful door and baseboard moulding installation, orderly and tidy demolition, working diligently on schedule and made good daily progress with good documentation and photos, clear communication around cost of individual projects/items, addressed punchlist issues and other small things I noticed promptly, repaired/replaced things that were damaged during renovation Areas to improve: There were some procurement related delays with doors (understandable given COVID delays), I'd say just be prepared to discuss timeline expectations and procure things earlier rather than later. Due to these delays, protection for the flooring was removed before everything was completed so some scuffs happened on the new floors. I also had to push back my move-in date just to avoid moving in before everything was ready. Recommendations for prospective renovators: It's best to ask as many questions and address things upfront, also be around to tour the space as it's being renovated as I caught many things (shower niche had wrong tiling for example) that many times get overlooked. Also just being around to confirm things gives the contractor confidence that you're getting what you want. And recommend coming in with a strong design vision and doing as much research as you can beforehand, as renovation sometimes requires you to make consequential decisions on the fly (placement of cabinet knobs, hooks and towel bars etc). Lastly, it was the right move to not try to live in the space during the renovation and also to go ahead and do kitchen/bath/flooring (anything you think you'll need) all together at the same time. It's expensive but probably less expensive and disruptive than trying to do it in phases. Now that I'm in this space, I can't imagine trying to do any of that sort of work. I just want to live here and enjoy :). Thanks Art Deco for making my first renovation project a great success!”
