Room of the Day: Game On in Sacramento
Like a royal flush beats a pair, this high-design spot for private card games trumps the typical basement
The owners of this Sacramento, California, home wanted to create the ultimate space for hosting their weekly card games, but with no room on the main living floor, they played the hand they were dealt and looked below the house. In the basement they found a little under 600 feet in the home theater to, well, play with.
A built-in banquette defines one seating area, where guests can relax with a drink.
But the action happens at the card table, where players can get their game on in cushy chairs. A multiarmed light fixture ensures that everyone can clearly see their cards.
The television can be closed off by sliding doors covered in dry-erase board (great for keeping score).
The room is nearly all white, save for this dramatic accent wall covered in a paper by Maharam. Look closely, and you can see the cool secret: The pattern was created by layering photos of plastic, recyclable items.

The center of the table is embossed with the letter “Q” in honor of their name for the space, Club Q.

The room is divided into zones. Against one wall, there’s a well-stocked bar. A bright-white epoxy floor keeps things modern and bright in the belowground room.
