“Architectural design of our home. He designed the home, all the layout and configuration and did all the construction drawings. He put our desires into focus and into the design of our home. Outstanding ability to translate our concepts into structure and to implement the design concept into an actual structure that meets all tests. Always available to address any construction design or implementation issues. Works conceptually and practically with the entire build team, designer, builder and all contractors to implement all features without negatively affecting the resultant design and features. The house was under construction for three years. He visited the house on his own at least monthly; spoke to us or met us regularly and met with our builder and interior designer regularly all to insure that it was being built properly.”

We spoke with several architects prior to meeting James Hess, that could not give us the look that we wanted on the exterior of the house. James helped us work through some tricky situations. We did not want our addition to look like an afterthought!! When the project was completed, the addition looked as though it should have always been there! “My husband and I were very happy with James' work for us which included architectural work for our master bedroom and bathroom and our kitchen. Our Oak Park home is a 1906 gem and we wanted to keep the integrity of detail yet become more livable. Both projects included moving walls; designing wooden details--windows to cabinets--that reflected detail in the rest of the house; placing weight-bearing beams to support ceilings and roof; redesigning stairs to basement and back yard, etc. Vanderheyden is a good listener and a solid architect/designer. He worked well with both our contractor and kitchen designer to improve and carry out our designs. We give him 5 stars. Linda and John Hillman”
