The owners of this beachfront retreat wanted a whole-home remodel. They were looking to revitalize their three-story vacation home with an exterior inspired by Japanese woodcraft and an interior the evokes Scandinavian simplicity. Now, the open kitchen and living room offer an energetic space for the family to congregate while enjoying a 360 degree coastal views. Built-in bunkbeds for six ensure there’s enough sleeping space for visitors, while the outdoor shower makes it easy for beachgoers to rinse off before hitting the deckside hot tub. It was a joy to help make this vision a reality!

A carefully positioned skylight pulls sunlight down into the shower. The reflectance off of the glazed handmade tiles suggests water pouring down the stone walls of a cave.

Walls with thick plaster arches and simple tile designs feel very natural and earthy in the warm Southern California sun. Terra cotta floor tiles are stained to mimic very old tile inside and outside in the Spanish courtyard shaded by a 'new' old olive tree. The outdoor plaster and brick fireplace has touches of antique Indian and Moroccan items. An outdoor garden shower graces the exterior of the master bath with freestanding white tub- while taking advantage of the warm Ojai summers. The open kitchen design includes all natural stone counters of white marble, a large range with a plaster range hood and custom hand painted tile on the back splash. Wood burning fireplaces with iron doors, great rooms with hand scraped wide walnut planks in this delightful stay cool home. Stained wood beams, trusses and planked ceilings along with custom creative wood doors with Spanish and Indian accents throughout this home gives a distinctive California Exotic feel. This fully custom bathroom features custom cut thassos marble walls tiling and calacatta gold marble slab floor. The satin nickel inlays on the floor and walls and the polished nickel fixtures add a sophisticated detail to complete the room.

A cramped and partitioned primary bathroom gets a facelift with an open concept based on neutral tones and natural textures. A warm bamboo floating vanity anchors the room, with large format porcelain tile covering the entire floor. A walk in shower glass panel mirrors a etched glass privacy panel for the commode. The tub is flanked my partial walls that act as a tub filler mount and bench. Niches in each space add function and style, blending seamlessly in with the tile. A large trough sink sits below an inset custom framed mirror.

Everything about this bathroom was small, including the amount of storage. The homeowner’s wanted a new design for their Master Bathroom that would create the illusion of a larger space. With a sloped ceiling and a small footprint that could not be enlarged, Mary Maney had quite a challenge to meet all the storage needs that the homeowner’s requested. A fresh, contemporary color palette and contemporary designs for the plumbing fixtures were a must. To give the illusion of a larger space, a large format porcelain tile that looks like a natural white marble was selected for the floor and runs up one entire wall of the bathroom. A frameless shower door was added to give a clear view of the new tiled shower and shows off the iridescent glass tile on the back wall. The glass tile adds a glitzy shimmer to the room. A soft, blue paint color was selected for the walls and ceiling to coordinate with the tile. To open up the floor space as much as possible, a compact toilet was installed and a contemporary wall mounted vanity in a beautiful blue tone that accents the shower tile nicely. The floating vanity has one large drawer that pulls out and has hidden compartments and an electrical supply for a hair dryer and other hair care tools. Two side by-side recessed medicine cabinets visually open up the room and gain additional storage for make-up and hair care products. This Master Bathroom may be small in square footage, but it is now big on storage. With the soft blue and white color palette, the space is refreshing and the sleek contemporary plumbing fixtures add the element of contemporary design the homeowner’s were looking to achieve.
