On another note be wary of designers who are tied to a particular product. You want a designer to come to the table with a variety of solutions and design options, not one who duplicates a cookie cutter design with products that he/she is just getting a financial return on.

While Rebecca is right that to become a registered interior designer requires more education & the passing of a difficult exam, when & looked into it years ago, I saw that the bulk of what it covered did not apply to creating functional kitchens & bathrooms. In my professional experience, interior designers & architects typically focus more on aesthetics over function & don't necessarily have the same detailed knowledge of kitchen & bathroom design, I agree that you need to see if any particular designer's experience, training & approach are right for your project.

As a design professional in business for 25+ years, I considered myself capable of any re-model. As a smart person, who doesn't cook, I have always hired interior designers to assist in my kitchen remodels (3 so far). I have seen so many homes that suffered due to a lack of experience.
