Traci D'Alessio did a phenomenal job in meeting this challenge. her thoughtful and meticulous approach, exceptional skills of listening, and genuine interest in our preferences resulted in an award winning kitchen. I would hire her again for any project. I will also mention that we had the added challenge of employing a design/build firm for our contracting/building needs which meant that at times there were conflicts and potential awkwardness with 2 architects involved. When it was necessary and she felt that the product might be compromised, Traci D'Alessio managed these potential conflicts well -- an underappreciated but VERY important skill. Last, Traci has an exceptional command of the most up-to-date technology in her profession. This enables her to make changes with lightning speed (in comparison to the surprisingly archaic methods of many local architects) -- this will save you not only time but money.”

“Chavo Patino amazed my wife and I with the creativity and intelligence he put into designing our dream home. We knew he could design something modern and simple, but after we moved in, we then saw how well all the pieces fit together. Having a lake in your back yard naturally makes this house relaxing and comfortable. At the same time, he found a way to fit three bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, plus an office into 2200 sq feet without losing that sense of comfort. We wanted an open living, dining, kitchen area, but the dramatic open space floored us when we saw the finished space. He could see the value of arranging the food prep area so that it faces the back of the house. I never get tired of that view while preparing dinner. Bedrooms 2 and 3 are on the opposite side of the house from the master suite which gives us some added privacy and quiet. He spent time to look closely at the topography of the building site so that the design worked with the land, not against it. The downward slope gave us a chance for a walk out basement, but he could see the opportunity to make that into a finished basement gym with windows and a separate door to the lake. He extended the roof line to cover the first 6 feet of the rear deck area. This gives us plenty of sun in the morning, while offering outdoor natural shade in the hot afternoons. This little added design idea also saves 20% or more off our cooling and heating bill. Chavo’s design process was very helpful. He started with the elements we wanted in this house and turned those into early concepts. I am not sure if he can do this will all his clients but he drove up to Virginia to meet with us to go over these drafts in person. It really helped us to get to the next step which was to combine elements of different concepts. After a number of edits and a few skype meetings, we had the final plan. I can’t recommend Chavo enough. He comes from a family of architects which was clearly evident over time. He knew how to work with the local engineering company and our builder to make sure our ideas were not edited out due to local codes or “we usually don’t do it this way”. If you want a custom home to truly reflect who you are, Chavo will be patient, very responsive and I am sure he will amaze you as well with the final product. “Calico Studio was like working with old friends (they provided full design and construction document services for a ground up custom home)! I had the real potential of being a "client-zilla" with an architectural degree of my own, a bit of an analytical nature, active in commercial RE & construction all of my career, and worst of all, no true idea of what I wanted besides the spaces and a rough floor plan sketch. Just coming out of nearly 30 yrs where my ex defined and chose our style, I only had a swirl of thoughts (a big Houzz ideabook), and a jumble of images in my head. Heather was the BEST at sorting through all of this - including my head! We are breaking ground soon on "my first and last HOME" thanks to Calico Studio! It isn't what I imagined it would be, and it is more. And Heather's little tweaks have been genius for the manner in which I live. Based upon her Houzz presence, and the work shown on the independent Calico website, she was an easy choice over 4 other architects to help interpret my needs, wants and desires. I didn't even check references - however, if anyone ever wants to speak with me directly about my experiences, I will be happy to be one for Calico, besides this writing. Heather is completely knowledgeable about the codes, environmental concerns, permitting, the political nature of dealing with municipalities, materials, new markets, work flow - you name it - and without vanity or ego. She is a delight to work with, and I am very lucky I found the perfect architect for my dream home.”
