“Vailes has done two major projects for us. In 2018 we had a new heat pump installed and had a screened in porch built. In both cases Vailes was very professional and did an excellent job. Our new heat pump works very well and keeps the house comfortable year around. The screened in porch is beautiful It was built using ipe wood and cat-proof screen. We and the cats enjoy it.”

“There are many architects and builders but few who have the skill, experience, and vision to design and build a green house. Looking for a modern architect in the area, we found Patrick's website and we got to know him before we hired him. We liked him immediately and never "interviewed' anyone else. We never regretted it. He shared our desire to build lightly, letting the surroundings influence the design and materials. He artfully brokered the inevitable differences of opinion between husband and wife, and we enjoyed the consultative process of working out the design together as a small team. After the design was complete, we were happy to have him build the house, too, which has worked out beautifully. On complicated custom houses, there are many situations where unforeseen circumstances or questions arise, and things move more quickly and smoothly when the person responsible for constructing the house is the same person as the person who envisioned it. The house is not yet complete, but we are currently on budget (more or less) and the product is a work of art. I have suffered through many residential and commercial building projects over a lifetime, and this is the first one I've enjoyed. If you're looking for a person with the sophistication and experience to design and/or build a complicated "dream house," Patrick is your man. And if you're not sure, ask him to take you to our house and show you what he is capable of creating. I think you'll come away a believer!”

“Darwin is a skilled, thoughtful contractor who prioritizes doing the the job right. He put a two room addition with a screen porch on our cabin in July 2015, cedar siding in October, and built a 12x16 cedar shed in March 2016. During the addition build, Darwin expressed concern about potential ice/water issues given the pitch of the new roof we had designed. He drew out alternative plans and offered to do the extra work without charge, because he wanted the final product to be well constructed. It turned out amazing and definitely exceeded expectations. His experience and capability were a huge asset on this project. Additionally, he finished the job ahead of schedule and was just a nice guy about everything. We hired him again last fall to put up new cedar siding, and it turned out beautifully. This March, he built our garage/shed. To our surprise, he hand crafted fantastic cedar herringbone doors for us, because he wanted the project to have a special look to match the cabin. The doors are almost too lovely for an outbuilding, and demonstrate Darwin's outstanding design capability and work ethic. He has consistently gone above and beyond on every job, and his workmanship is phenomenal. We would definitely hire him again and highly recommend him.”

“I worked with Pat Hennis (and his dog Lucky) of Phoenix Construction on a once-in-a-lifetime job in Western Virginia. The house is a hunting/fishing retreat, and incorporated a 65' by 26' relocated historic log barn as its core. We had fun on this project, and everyone, from the Owner down to the laborer, was a team player. Pat used his skills in dealing with the idiosyncrasies of antique log construction, and made some remarkable suggestions when the pieces wouldn't fit 'just right'.
