Whether you're an all-star chef or simply cooking basic family meals, odds are you'll want a range in your kitchen. Factors to consider include deciding on gas or electric, the size, and any additional features you may want to include in your range.

Should you choose a gas or electric range? This is often the biggest question to answer when choosing a range. See below to understand the differences between a gas and electric range, and the pros and cons of both.
Electric: Generally less expensive than gas models, an electric range allows you to maintain low heat levels yet can sometimes prove difficult when it comes to regulating a consistent temperature overall. An electric range features either a standard coil burner, where the coils sit above the range top or inside a recessed cavity, or a smooth-top, where the radiant elements are installed beneath a glass surface for a smooth look. Remember, the higher the wattage on your burners, the faster your food will cook.
Gas: A gas range allows for better control of temperatures and lets you cool down or heat up cookware faster than electric. Certain burners come with a fast high output for quick boiling or searing, while others offer a simmering option by producing a gentle low heat. It’s recommended that your gas range come complete with at least one high output burner as well as medium and low options.

How large should your range be? Ranges come in a variety of sizes to accommodate your needs. 30” is the standard, however you can go as large as 60”. To determine what size works best for you, consider how you’ll be using it: will you be cooking for large amounts of people? Will you need to utilize several burners at a time? In addition, take into consideration how much room you have in your kitchen. It’s possible this will also affect how large your range can be.

What types are available? Depending on your kitchen needs, you can generally choose from freestanding, slide-in or drop-in ranges. Freestanding do not need to be fitted into cabinetry and therefore have finished sides, whereas slide-in ranges are made to slide between cabinets. Drop-in ranges are made to rest on a toe kick plate in between cabinetry.

How do you ensure it will fit into its intended space? Be sure to carefully measure the range itself as well as the space you plan to place it your kitchen before making any purchases. Take height, width and depth measurements. Remember that if you decide on a gas range, you'll need access to a natural gas source.

What additional features might you consider? Make the most of your range by customizing it to your needs. Consider a self-cleaning oven for odor control, or a convection oven to cook your food at quicker rates. Maybe you'd like a warming drawer on your range so you can keep cooked food warm, or hot surface indicator lights so you know when the stove has officially cooled down after use.
